9 Future Outlook The convergence of ultra-low-power electronics and advanced energy harvesting technologies will accelerate the move toward battery-free IoT systems. LoRaWAN, with its low energy requirements and global ecosystem, is well-positioned to lead this transformation. Now that IoT devices powered by energy harvesting modules and wirelessly communicating through LoRaWAN with cloud-applications will be available, the total addressable market for IoT will increase significantly. In the past several large deployments have been stalled, due to the issue of maintaining batteries and the associated costs and disconnection of data. In several verticals like Smart Buildings, Asset Tracking, Agriculture, Smart Cities the mix of LoRaWAn and Energy Harvesting will enable IoT solutions that can be maintenance-free, or in other words: Connect and Forget! LoRa Alliance ® WHITEPAPER Conclusion Eliminating batteries from LoRaWAN devices is not only technically feasible now, but also strategically advantageous. By leveraging energy harvesting and designing for ultra-low- power consumption, engineers can build the next generation of sustainable, maintenance- free IoT devices. This approach is critical for realizing the full potential of IoT solutions using LoRaWAN in a world increasingly focused on environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.
