Position, Balance, Aids
Required at this level:
The coach should confirm and strengthen all the elements
of position, balance, and application of the aids as detailed
under Starter through Preliminary Level Dressage
Teaching Requirements.
The Intermediate level rider should ride with a secure,
relaxed, supple, and independent seat through all
movements. It is this seat which permits the required ap-
plication of seamless, coordinated, effective independent
aids throughout all required movements and transitions.
At this level, the rider should be able to:
• Employ the correct and effective positioning of the aids,
including weight distribution, throughout all their riding on
the flat and over fences.
• Demonstrate advanced strength and balance in trot and
canter without gripping or tensing the legs, hands, or body
for balance, with and without stirrups as appropriate.
• Understand the role of, and utilize, their tools: half-halts,
lateral work, and transitions, to strengthen the horse and
to teach the horse the correct balance for collected and
medium work.
• Understand and demonstrate correct use of aids and po-
sitioning for shoulder-in, haunches-in, half-pass, simple
change of lead and counter canter.
• Produce a horse who is light and responsive to the aids
without the use of stronger bits and spurs, as the degree of
difficulty of the required movements increases.
Intermediate level riders may be introduced, as
appropriate for their horse, to the proper use of the
double bridle as an auxiliary aid for their dressage training
and competition, permitted at the Intermediate level.
(*Note: The FEI has removed the use of the
double bridle at the CCI3* Level as of 2021)
