Snow Shovels, Pushers and Brooms
Workers often have to use maual tools such as shovels, pushers,
and brooms to manage snow removal. Common hazards
associated with these tools include:
MSDs from posture, duration, and force
Injury from repetition
Overexertion
Injuries due to visibility
Cold
Fatigue
Points to consider when selecting a shovel to reduce injury:
Shovel selection
Weight - Shovel should be light-weight, yet sturdy
Length - The handle should reach the users chest to reduce bending
Shaft Type - Shafts with a bend may reduce strain on the lower back when
used correctly. Employers should consider proper ergonomic designed
shovels when factoring in purchasing and selection needs.
Handle type - Most snow shovels have a "D" shaped handle. Make sure the
handle type does not force the wrist into awkward positions
Shovel blade size - Smaller blades help prevent overloading and reduce
strain during heavy snowfalls. Wider blades may be more suitable for light,
fluffy snow.
Eqipment and
PPE
Inspect tools before use for cracks, loose or broken handles, and worn edges.
Wear non-slip footwear with aggressive treads. Consider using ice cleats for
added traction on icy surfaces.
Apply salt or sand as you work to improve traction and reduce slips.
