20 // MARCH 2026 USAHOCKEYMAGAZINE.COM "It is the perfect way for her to break it," Stecklein said. "She is the best player of all time. To score goals like that as consistently as she did it is insane. We know she is someone that gets it done. For her to do it, seeing her in front of the net and realizing she tipped it in, it is classic Hilary Knight. She is an amazing person, player and a great leader and captain." Knight is a record 10-time world champion and owns all three scoring milestone records (goals, assists and points) in IIHF Women's Hockey World Championship history. Five months later from when she first spoke of Knight's leadership and game-win- ning ability, Coyne Schofield had a simple description of Knight's Milan magic. "Poetic," she said. "Hilary always goes out with a bang. From the proposal (to Brittany Bowe) that had me falling off a chair to her record-breaking goal. Getting another gold medal for her, so happy for her and she is the greatest to do it. You literally can't script it any better." The once "elusive" gold medal that Knight had been chasing ever since 2018 is no more. As the 23 players stood arm in arm at center ice, they all sang the U.S. national anthem with nothing but love for each other. Their captain couldn't be prouder. "It's been an incredible ride," Knight said. "I just have to soak this all in because this room is just so special. This team is so spe- cial. This is the best U.S. Hockey team I have ever been a part of and that is so tre- mendous. "I love this group."
