DURING OPERATION 1. Keep hands clear: ensure hands stay clear of planer. 2. Position your body: stand to one side of the planer, never directly behind wood being fed into planer. 3. Turn on: make sure cutter is at full speed before placing piece in the planer. 4. Position the workpiece: place workpiece firmly on the table and use in-feed and out-feed support if stock is long. 5. Feed the workpiece: feed workpiece into the planer, best side down, with the grain, thickest to thinnest. Let go of the workpiece as soon as it engages the infeed roller. 6. Avoid force: allow the automatic feed rollers to pull the stock into the planer knives. 7. Move to outfeed side: without crossing the cutting path line, walk to the outfeed side of the planer to retrieve the stock. 8. Repeat as needed: make additional passes to achieve desired outcome (flip workpiece as needed) adjusting cutter depth as needed. TIPS Clear the planer: never start the planer with the workpiece touching the infeed roller. Keep a safe body position: never stand in front of the of the workpiece being fed in, never look directly into machine while it is running. Stand to the side. Machine hand safety: always keep hands on top of workpiece when feeding into planer keeping a clear distance, never place fingers under the workpiece as it may cause a pinch point. Never reach into the planer towards the cutter. Use proper dimensions: consult manufacturer's manual for specifications. Stay present: concentrate on the job, avoid distractions, never leave the equipment unattended while running. Clear jams safely: turn off and unplug planer and wait for it to stop, raise the carriage, before clearing jams or removing obstructions. Adjusting planer: never adjust the planer while it is cutting. POST OPERATION 1. Power down: turn off equipment and wait for all motion to stop. Never leave it running unattended. 2. Clean safely: use a vacuum, stick or brush to clean dust and debris. Do not use hands or compressed air. © Workplace Safety & Prevention Services 2026.
