How did you first get into photog- raphy, specifically the shipping/ waterfront scene? Photography started as a way to docu- ment the various ships I saw. For many "boat nerds," the annual publication Know Your Ships is a big deal. Aside from the information it provides on the ships, it is full of great shipping photos. That was an early guide for me in photo- graphing ships. What draws you to Great Lakes shipping and the working water- front for images? It combines the natural beauty of the Lake Superior region with an industrial reach that spans the globe. Getting a beautiful shot of a sunrise is nice, but when you can combine that with a ship that might be traveling around the world, it adds something extra. How would you describe your photography work? I would describe it as "mine." I try to bring an individual creativeness to it. We are very lucky to have a ton of great photographers in our area, but put- ting my own twist on a photo of Lake Superior or the harbor brings a sense of accomplishment and inspires me to strive for excellence. Do you have a personal connection to the lake from growing up in the region? Visiting? Most of us who have grown up here feel a personal connection to Lake Superior. I vividly remember Dennis Anderson breaking news of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking. The next day in school, I learned that the father of one of my classmates was on the ship. I was only 8 years old at the time, but it stuck with me and started my fascination with ships. Are most of your shots planned or spontaneous? How do you know when you get a great one? I often have an idea to chase. It might change as things unfold, but I usually plan to go to a certain location and shoot a certain subject. When a photo turns out as planned or has that perfect light, you just feel it. My idea of a great shot might differ from what others think, but I shoot for myself. That helps me get what I personally consider to be "keepers."
