WINS CLUB 40 0 Jonathan Quick's 410 career NHL victories is the most all time by an American goalie. 400 N THE LONG AND GLORIOUS CAREER of g oaltender Jonathan Quick, the masterpiece came in the spring of 2012. His team, the Los Angeles Kings, qualified for the NHL playoffs, but just barely. Of the 16 teams in that postseason, the Kings had the weakest offense, having scored fewer regular-season goals than all the others. They'd finished with only 95 points, fewest among the Western Conference teams. But once the playoffs started, the young tender was on fire. In the first round, Quickie, as he's known in hockey circles, allowed just eight goals in five games as the Kings took down the top seed, the Vancouver Canucks. In a second-round sweep, he gave up only six goals. For the confer - ence title, it was again eight goals in five games. In the Cup Final, Quick, then 24, squared off with a goaltending giant, Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils. Quick allowed just a single goal in each of the first two games, enabling the Kings to escape with two pre- cious, 2-1 overtime victories. Then he pitched a shutout, putting Los Angeles on the cusp of its first Cup. Quick only allowed two goals in each of the next two, but New Jersey still managed to win both. Then in Game 6, he stopped 17 of 18 New Jersey shots. "It was 6-1 with a minute to go, but still, you're trained to focus, not think about what's about to happen," Quick recalled. "Then your teammates are skating around with the Stanley Cup. It's the stuff you dreamed about as a kid. It's a special moment." Quick would never say it, but this is no exaggeration: That was one of the greatest goaltending performances in Stanley Cup history. The Kings were not an offensive machine, and yet their goaltender led them to 16 post-season wins with just four losses, and it earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. But that's not all of it. His goals-against average of 1.41 is the lowest posted by any Cup- winning netminder since 1987, when the NHL playoffs expanded to four seven-game series. Pick your goalie—Bobrobski, Vasilevsky, Roy, Hasek—none of them ever slammed the door as tightly as Quick did in 2012. After 19 seasons in the NHL, Quick hung 'em up in April. He won three Cups—a second with the Kings in 2014, and as a backup for the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. And he's a record holder. His 410 wins is the most ever by an American- born goalie, ahead of Ryan Miller's 391. He's one of only 15 goalies with more than 400 career wins.
