Distractions through listening can result in hazardous situations. Evaluation of concentration level should be performed before use. Source of ignition HPD with ANR can create additional risks of ignition in atmospheres with potential flammable gases. Check for explosive atmospheric certifications before use. HPDs without electronics do not create a risk of ignition. Increase noise exposure through media connections (e.g. music, communication) In ear noise exposures are likely to increase with media communications. The Noise Limiter specification from the HPD is necessary to evaluate the overall noise exposure at the ear. HPDs without noise limiters can result in exposure above the criteria level (L ex,8 = 85 dBA). Care should be taken to select an HPD with a noise limiter appropriate for the communication level needs and duration of potential exposure during the full work shift. © Workplace Safety & Prevention Services 2026.
