"Opportunities are the product of preparation and hard work." – Mike Pereira head coach Choate Rosemary Hall 36 // SEPTEMBER 2026 USAHOCKEYMAGAZINE.COM Sometimes when we are hyper-focused on achieving our goals, small mistakes or minor setbacks can feel monumental. However, in those moments it is important to remember the primary reason we like to challenge ourselves: It's fun. "A few things I like to keep in mind throughout the way are the non-negotiables," Guzzo said. "Always work hard, focus on what you can control and, most importantly, have fun." Yes, it can be hard, but hard and fun are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the hard things can often be the most fun and the most rewarding. But even when we don't get the rewards we are hoping for, it is important to remember evaluating your performance does not equate to evaluating yourself as a person. Remember that it's the courage to try that truly matters and challenging yourself is part of the fun. "There's more to hockey than wins and losses," concluded Layla Hemp, a goalie for the University of Minnesota women's hockey team. "Sometimes we forget we do this for fun and one mistake doesn't define who you are as a person."
