DURING OPERATION 1. Position your body - stand to one side of the lathe chuck, never directly inline with workpiece mounting point 2. Start Slow – always start turning from zero/slowest speed of lathe 3. Apply tool carefully – do not make heavy cuts on long slender pieces 4. Ease through - reduce force as the tool contacts the workpiece 5. Adjust compound slide – adjust compound position to ensure proper positioning throughout machining 6. Keep hands clear - stay away from chuck and drill area; never reach around or under. Use long handled tools and long pieces of sanding paper during sanding and filing applications TIPS Power off to adjust - make all adjustments and measurements with the machine off Use the right tool – don't force tool or attachment to do a job its not designed for. Only use tools designed for metal working Keep lathe in order – ensure tools are stored in a manner that will not fall during operation Stay present - concentrate on the job, avoid distractions, never leave the lathe running unattended Let go safely - if the stock slips, turn off the lathe and wait for a full stop before adjusting Do not overreach - avoid reaching over, behind, or around the lathe while its running POST OPERATION 1. Reset Speed – reset lathe speed to zero/slowest speed before turning lathe off 2. Power down – always release automatic feeds, turn off equipment, and wait for all motion to stop. Never use your hands to stop the chuck/face plate from spinning 3. Remove materials - once motion has stopped, remove workpiece and tools/accessories 4. Clean safely - use a vacuum (when appropriate), stick or brush to clean dust and debris. Do not use hands or compressed air. CAUTION: lathe metal chips may be hot Only use equipment if you are trained and authorised to do so.
