I N T R O D U C T I O N B Y M AT T H E W B R A D B U R Y Osborne Samuel are delighted to present a select and exceptional group of Modern British paintings and drawings for Frieze Masters 2026 and subsequent exhibition back at the gallery on Cork Street. Among the highlights are a very rare 1952 Lucian Freud painting on copper depicting a view of Paddington from his Delamere Terrace apartment. This is one of just fourteen known paintings on copper by Freud, which was reproduced for the first ever time as recently as 2021 in Lucian Freud, The Copper Paintings, edited by David Scherf. L.S. Lowry's The Estuary, dating from 1944, is another highlight and one of his most accomplished beach scenes, painted as the end of World Ward II approached, which displays the artist's remarkable painting technique at this time. Two major oils by Frank Auerbach, each depicting one of his favoured sitters, David Landau and J.Y.M., illustrate brilliantly how the artist reached to the core of his models' character. Also, In tandem with Kew Gardens' acclaimed Henry Moore exhibition we are showing two important drawings by Moore dating from the 1940s, the artist's most celebrated period for works on paper. Following on from our highly successful Keith Vaughan: States of Tension exhibition at the gallery in the spring we are exhibiting an early masterpiece by the artist; Group of Bathers, 1951, is a precursor to his important Assembly of Figures series, several of which are now in British museums. Each of the works in this exclusive exhibition have hallmarks of the very best Modern British art. This will coincide at both Frieze Masters and the gallery with our exhibition, Five British Sculptors, inspired by the American filmmaker Warren Forma's 1964 documentary following his visit to the studios of Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick, Dame Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. The link below will take you to this separate catalogue. We very much look forward to meeting you in October and November to share these with you. Exhibitions on the horizon at the gallery include a new John Craxton show as Daphnis and Chloƫ (1951) is relaunched by Royal Ballet and Opera in the new year. Craxton famously designed the costumes and set for the original ballet in Covent Garden. In addition, an exciting Henry Moore exhibition is also being planned which promises to be very special indeed, with several unique sculptures that have not been seen publicly for many decades.
