HOUSE / TECHNO 22 www.guestlist.net GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: BOOKA SHADE If you can't stand the heat, you better Booka place in the Shade! Though already four albums in, Booka Shade have retained the sense of underground authenticity and mystery which saw their name become a reference point for German house and techno. The true charm of Booka Shade lies in their ability to work huge crowds at diverse parties worldwide. 'In White Rooms' is a perfect example of tech-house deep enough to see you well past 6am; staying true to that notoriously repetitive, niche techno sound. Fast becoming the big-sounding artist in the European dance scene by blending their deep-house and techno taste in a refreshing unique sound, the German duo are set to take the world by strom in the coming months. With regular tour dates worldwide, Booka Shade are an act to catch soon if you haven't already jumped on the bandwagon. ALBUM OF THE MONTH: PRAISE There's something organic about a decent 90's acid house tune that is driven from the core of four basic piano chords, so it's a welcoming feeling when a current producer goes and produces such a belter. Alex Agore's 'Praise' is a well worked take on that purely distinctive acid sound. You have the assurance of a constant high-tempo beat, screechy background vocals and a feel-good warmth that you can't really get from anything other than a solid set of staccato piano chords. Reminiscent of an old Alison Limerick or CeCe Peniston retro Issue 54 / 2013 EVENT REVIEW: GOTTWOOD A glance at one of the most forward thinking fairy tale festivals around. Far away from anything vaguely resembling what one might call 'civilisation' lies the Forest of Carreglwyd. Here you won't find your busy rush-hour traffic jams or high street McDonalds, but a small wooden sign entitled 'Gottwood Chapter 4: Welcome to the Woods'. Not only does this bubble of a fantasy festival contain the finest visually atmospheric psychedelia, it also sports a host of some of the most exciting new artists, producers and DJs, as well as appearances from some old favourites. Thursday was a fairly relaxed affair with only two of the five stages open, but TCTS and Jigsaw both set the standard for the next few days, blaring out a plethora of house and techno crowd-pleasers in quick succession from the Boxford Caravan stage. Things really started to kick off on Friday and Saturday with new Amsterdam duo Detroit Swindle playing their unique brand of Detroit-inspired deep house at the Apogee stage in the evening, before Ben UFO and Crazy P split techno and disco fans between the Boxford Caravan and the trippy RFID 'iglu' dome. Saturday night belonged to Maribou State and Pedestrian though, who played a worldclass back to back set journeying through floaty house and downright funky old school disco. The greatest achievement of Gottwood lies in its carefree embracing spirit, welcoming whoever and whatever for a weekend with a real community feel. A shining light of how to run a small non-commercial festival in the middle of nowhere, it is perhaps a shame that Gottwood cannot remain a secret forever. ON OUR PLAYLIST Here's what's on our house playlist this month: Basement Jaxx What a difference your love makes Monitor 66 Vitae hit, 'Praise' is an active reminder that every now and then, on occasion, people do just want to dance. Smashing straight at you in a jingle of optimistic fever, Alex Agore's release this month is the type we should keep a watchful eye out for, and deserves all the 'Praise' it gets.
