Dr Dre
Real name Andre Romelle Young, Dr Dre is one of the pioneers of West Coast rap and the current CEO of Aftermath Entertainment
and Beats Electronics. But his rap career didn't start in the boardroom, not at all.
Dre made his name as part of the legendary rap group N.W.A alongside Ice
Cube and Eazy-E, known for it's explicit lyrics which tell it as it is, their song
which made famous the slogan "F*ck
tha Police" is a classic rap anthem. His
debut solo album, The Chronic, released
in 1992, was a massive hit, receiving a
Grammy for the single "Let Me Ride".
Dr Dre is seen as responsible for popularising the West Coast style of rap
music with its synthesiser-based slow
and heavy beats and souped up funky
basslines. He is also responsible for producing or signing on virtually every notable rapper from the West Coast since
Tupac, from Snoop Dogg to Xzibit to
The Game and most recently Kendrick

Lamar as well as non West Coast meganames like Eminem and 50 Cent. But Dr
Dre does have a recurring unfinished
project on his hands, his final studio
album, already titled Detox. Originally
meant for release in early 2000, the release date for this highly anticipated album has been pushed back many times,
with delays blamed on Dre's heavy pro-
duction schedule and his other business
commitments.
Whether or not Dre eventually releases
Detox, and if it's gonna be as gamechanging as it's being touted remains
to be seen. But what's for sure, is that
the place of Dr. Dre in the pantheon of
hip hop greats is secure. Dre the legend
producer, Rapper and Hip Hop icon.
