HIP HOP / RNB 29 7 www.guestlist.net Issue 54 / 2013 s nd ge le Dr Dre Real name Andre Romelle Young, Dr Dre is one of the pioneers of West Coast rap and the current CEO of Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics. But his rap career didn't start in the boardroom, not at all. Dre made his name as part of the legendary rap group N.W.A alongside Ice Cube and Eazy-E, known for it's explicit lyrics which tell it as it is, their song which made famous the slogan "F*ck tha Police" is a classic rap anthem. His debut solo album, The Chronic, released in 1992, was a massive hit, receiving a Grammy for the single "Let Me Ride". Dr Dre is seen as responsible for popularising the West Coast style of rap music with its synthesiser-based slow and heavy beats and souped up funky basslines. He is also responsible for producing or signing on virtually every notable rapper from the West Coast since Tupac, from Snoop Dogg to Xzibit to The Game and most recently Kendrick AUGUST RELEASES Lamar as well as non West Coast meganames like Eminem and 50 Cent. But Dr Dre does have a recurring unfinished project on his hands, his final studio album, already titled Detox. Originally meant for release in early 2000, the release date for this highly anticipated album has been pushed back many times, with delays blamed on Dre's heavy pro- duction schedule and his other business commitments. Whether or not Dre eventually releases Detox, and if it's gonna be as gamechanging as it's being touted remains to be seen. But what's for sure, is that the place of Dr. Dre in the pantheon of hip hop greats is secure. Dre the legend producer, Rapper and Hip Hop icon.
