REGGAE / DANCE HALL Issue 54 / 2013 www.guestlist.net Artist of the month Congo Natty Michael West, aka Rebel MC, aka Congo Natty has being doing it since before you were born. Spear heading Reggae's surge into the forefront of British dance culture in the late 80's alongside names like Double Trouble and labels such as 'Kickin'' and 'Shut up & Dance' in the form of what soon became a sensation known as 'Jungle'. Now the junglist superstar is back with his appropriately dubbed ninth album 'Jungle Revolution' the sound of which sees him look back to his early roots featuring throwback guests such as UK Allstars as well as an appearance from General Levy who is responsible for 1994 ragga hit 'Incredible'. The Tottenham born MC has come a long way since his 1989 success with rave hit 'Street Tuff'. Album of the month: Reincarnated The album might be the ninth studio album by the artist formerly known as Snoop Dogg but it represents the first of the 'reincarnated' Snoop Lion. The album also marks his departure from hip hop and his entrance into reggae. When Snoop Lion, as he prefers to be called now, announced that he was converting to the Rastafari religion and then travelled to Jamaica to study the Niyabinghi branch of the Rastafari movement, it seemed like it might be a passing fad. But this new album feels for real. The lead single for the album, 'Ashtrays and Heartbreaks' was surprising as it features Guestlist recommends: Reggae Gold Miley Cyrus, who has been trying her best to break the mould of the innocent teen popstar that she has been cast in. And the song strikes the right notes with its authentic reggae baseline and Snoop's effortless delivery. The album also featured some other more mainstream artistes like Drake, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes and Akon and was produced by Major Lazer, along with Mr Vegas and Supa Dups. While the album might not sound like a hardcore reggae LP, it offers up a soothing and thoroughly enjoyable blend of reggae roots and electro-pop sounds.
