Purdue has made easy work of Indiana State in its three contests against the Sycamores, winning by an average of 30.1 points per meeting. Back in 1926 under Coach Jimmy Phelan, the Boilermakers prevailed 38-0 against Indiana Teachers College, which was the name of the Terre Haute school in those days. Coach Fred Akers' final Purdue team made relatively easy work of ISU on Sept. 22, 1990, winning 41-13. It was the Boilermakers' first of just two wins in a season that began with some degree of promise. In the season opener a week before, the Boilermakers took No. 22 Washington to the wire. In '90, the Huskies went on to win 10 games, a Rose Bowl title and ended the season ranked fifth. Coach Don James' team won a share of the national title a year later. One of the storylines of the '90 game was wrestlerturned-receiver Dunyasha Yetts catching a 36-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Eric Hunter. After Akers was fired following the '90 season, Yetts transferred to Ohio State to wrestle full-time and ended up finishing third nationally at 142 pounds. Hunter had four touchdowns on the day, and Purdue blocked three kicks in the game, one of the few things the Boilermaker program excelled at under Akers. When the series with Indiana State resumed 16 years later in 2006, Purdue raced to a 23-7 lead in the first quarter, only to find itself up 26-21 at the break. The Boilermakers scored on all five of their second-half possessions for a comfortable victory. Curtis Painter ran and threw for two touchdowns each and receiver Dorien Bryant had a career-high 154 yards receiving on just six catches. The game was marred by a season-ending injury to defensive back Torri Williams (see cover on Page 10), as the Boilermaker secondary continued its trend from the year before of being plagued by injuries. — Alan Karpick sprained his ankle against Indiana and may not be available for the Purdue game. His loss at IU was a significant one for the Sycamores. R Sanford coached at Purdue from 1987-89 as quarterbacks coach under Fred Akers. R Indiana State center FN Lutz is a West Lafayette native and Harrison High School alumnus. The 2011 first-team AllMissouri Valley honoree missed last season after injuring his knee. It's All On The Best Purdue Sports Information On The Web NUMBER CRUNCHING R 44: The percentage of Indiana State's total offense Bell accounted for in rushing yardage alone, as his 1,475 net yards represented nearly half of ISU's 3,387 total yards. R 35.4: Purdue's average margin of victory in amassing a 7-0 all-time record against FCS (or Division I-AA) opponents, most recently last year's 48-6 season-opening win over Eastern Kentucky. j •Real-time recruiting •Game stories, analysis and blogs •Premium message boards Sign up for a 7-day free trial today! •Video, audio, live stream events and more •Exclusive access to premium information Part of the Rivals.com network Note: GoldandBlack.com is a separate subscription than your subscription to Gold and Black Illustrated/Gold and Black Express.
