All are invited to the ninth annual Centro San Juan Diego Gala Oct. 16 where the organization will honor several of those supporters for their outstanding service. Those being honored are as follows. LABORS OF LOVE MERIT WORKS OF ART Awards presented at the annual Centro San Juan Diego Gala are one-of-akind handcrafted pieces of art created by three artists who collaborate on the project: Rosalba Reyes, a Mexican immigrant, painted the original oil painting of St. Juan Diego displaying the tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Virginia Chavez, mother of two, produced the original repujado tin embossed design of decorative roses. Friends of St. Andrews The Archbishop José H. Gomez Social Justice Award recognizing commitment to social justice and community service will be presented to Friends of St. Andrews, a ministry of Queen of Peace Parish in Aurora. St. Andrew's serves the poor and homeless by providing up to 150 hot meals, and 24 food baskets, five days a week. A team of 95 volunteers "does it all" at the day shelter at 1525 Dallas St. in Aurora, according to director Maureen Hampson. "We have incredible dedicated volunteers," she said. "Some have been here since day one when St. Andrew's started in 1986. This couldn't be done without their love and dedication." Friends of St. Andrew's began with a small group of Queen of Peace parishioners who wanted to provide the homeless a place to come in out of the elements and have a cup of coffee. It quickly grew, now serving clients from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Monday through Friday with meals, emergency food baskets, personal care items, prescription assistance, referrals to other agencies as needed, and spiritual care when requested. They are supported by donors from the parish, other Catholic parishes, churches of other denominations, and youth groups such as Boy Scouts and high school sports' teams. "Our guests become our extended family," Hampson said. She estimated about 40 percent of those they serve are Hispanic. "We're so humbled to be recognized by Centro." Ralph Nagel Ralph Nagel will be presented the Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila Leadership Award that honors an individual who, by their life and service, reflects the values represented in the ministry of Denver's archbishop. Nagel, a parishioner of Holy Ghost Church in Denver, has been actively supporting education initiatives the last 12 years, beginning with involvement in the S.U.N. (Schools in Urban Neighborhoods) consortium. S.U.N was founded to pool resources to ensure no child was turned away from Catholic school for lack of tuition. Nagel adopted St. Rose of Lima School in Denver, whose enrollment is primarily low-income Hispanic students. He has provided more than 40 scholarships, and financially supported the addition of a gymnasium, library and kindergarten rooms. Nagel is founder of ACE Scholarships, which provides scholarships to low-income students who otherwise would not be able to receive a higher education, as well as the Alliance for School Choice. In his professional life, he founded Meridian Retirement Communities, which he owned for 25 years, and is currently president of Top Rock LLC, a private investment firm. "I was very touched when Centro said they wanted to make this recognition," he said. "We agree with what they do, and the groups they serve are essential to a vibrant community." Claudia and Antonio Chavez The Chavez's will be recognized with the Archbishop José H. Gomez Pastoral Leadership Award for outstanding leadership in Hispanic Ministry within their parish, St. Augustine in Brighton. Claudia and Antonio, born in Chihuahua, Mexico, have been married 19 years and have two children. They joined the Christian Family Movement 14 years ago and worked with the movement for two years before attending a weekend retreat with Worldwide Marriage Encounter. Following the weekend, they became general coordinators of the Worldwide Marriage Encounter in Spanish for several years. They also volunteer with marriage preparation in Spanish, are extraordinary ministers of holy Communion, lectors, and started a children's choir at St. Augustine's. They help with many retreats at the parish. Colorado Rockies Denver's Major League Baseball team, the Colorado Rockies, will receive the Amistad Award for enabling Bienestar Family Services, the family services branch of Centro, to minister to the material needs of thousands in the Denver Archdiocese. The award will be accepted by owner and CEO Richard Montfort. Since 2010, the Rockies have collaborated with Bienestar on various initiatives including the annual Jugueton Toy Drive for immigrant families, providing staff donations of more than $1,000 in grocery gift cards, supporting the annual Vino y Chocolate Toy Drive, the Las Madrinas Tribute and Centro Gala, and arranging special guest appearances by team mascot, Dinger the Dinosaur. Rockies' staff members have volunteered at events including serving as translators during tax season, and serving on planning committees. The organization has donated more than 100 tickets to baseball games to Centro participants and volunteers. This year's gala will be held at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel at 1550 Court Place. In addition to the awards ceremony, it will include dinner, a silent auction and speakers Archbishop Aquila and Jonathan Reyes, head of U.S. bishops' Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development and former director of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Denver.
