REGGAE / DANCE HALL guestlist.net Issue 55 / 2013 ARTIST OF THE MONTH A.O.T.M : PROTOJE. The contemporary reggae singer- songwriter from Jamaica is Guestlist's artist of the month. It is said that he is bringing new life to reggae music, with his fresh face and new approaches. While Bob Marley wanted to touch people using music, Protoje has a similar goal, but instead of limiting himself to music, he is trying to have this effect using art as a whole. Although he is cousins with one of the best Dance hall producers, Don Corleon, Protoje rarely lays his vocals down on dance hall "riddims" available in the mainstream. Check out his album The Seven Year Itch if you haven't already. GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: GYPTIAN The origins of reggae came about in the late 1960s , and thanks to the legend Bob Marley it has become globally recognised. It is kept alive by talented folk like Gyptian, an artist pivotal to modern reggae Windel Beneto Edwards, who we know as Gyptian, is best known for his infamous hits such as 'Hold Yuh', 'Nah Let Go' and 'Wine Slow'. Gyptian's musical talent was first discovered at the age of seven, when he began singing in church. His first successes, 'Is There A Place' and 'Serious Times' of 2005 captured the attention of many and as a canon reaction, Gyptian was nominated OUR PLAYLIST Here are the reggae tunes on our playlist this month: THE MIGHTY DIAMONDS VYBZ KARTEL ANTHONY B GYPTIAN PassTheKnowledge:Reggae Anthology Tribute To Legends 41 7 Kartel Forever: Trilogy Sex, Love and Reggae for "Best New Entertainer" at the International Reggae and World Music Awards. Despite Gyptian's quick rise to fame, it was his single 'Hold Yuh' which really gained his crossover success in 2010. Consequently, the single hit the Billboard Hot 100, ranking 91 that current year. More astonishingly, in June 2011 the single had re-entered the Billboard Hot 100, proudly gaining an even higher ranking position of 77. The single was a massive hit globally, especially in Jamaica, peaking number one for two consecutive weeks in the dance hall/reggae fusion charts. Gyptian, like many reggae legends, is Rastafarian. He ensures his beliefs and roots are not forgotten as he lyrically focuses on this within many of his songs.
