24-VALVE ENGINES . . . . Continued ENGINE OIL LEAK I have a '01 Turbo Diesel in my shop with 254,000 miles and an extremely bad engine oil leak on the driver's side of the engine. It has been leaking for some time, since underside of the truck is saturated with oil and it is dripping off of the rear bumper. I found the pushrod cover gasket was hard, brittle, and broken in several places. The delay in shifting occurs in all the gears, but I've noticed the shudder only when the transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear. I checked the fluid when the engine was cold. The fluid has the bright red color, the same as when it is new. Most of the miles were accumulated while towing a 4,000-pound trailer. wyatt1672, Ball Ground, GA The shuddering could be clutch packs or the torque converter depending on when it happens. At 300,000 miles you pretty much got the life out of the transmission. I guess it is due for a rebuild at this point. The delayed shifting is probably the governor pressure transducer and/or solenoid finally giving up, which is their usual failure symptom. A shudder on the 3rd to 4th gear shift could be the torque converter or Overdrive clutch pack depending on whether it happens on the shift or at torque converter lockup. This is the second time I've seen a gasket in that condition. hbowers, Caldwell, ID I replaced my pushrod cover gasket since it was beginning to leak a little. When I removed the cover, the gasket came off in pieces like yours. It might be good preventive maintenance repair to replace the gasket when the vacuum pump or the injection pump has been removed. TPringle, Annapolis, IL / Queretaro, MX Does anyone know the torque specification for the bolts in the pushrod cover? I cannot find the information in my service manual. WSHall If I remember correctly, it is 18ft-lbs. I use 3M Weather Strip Adhesive to seal the gasket on the cover before re-installing it on the block. Otherwise, part of the gasket might slip out from under the cover when tightening the bolts. hbowers I replaced the gasket on a friend's '99 Turbo Diesel with 650,000 miles last fall. I found the gasket in the same condition. The job took about two hours. Sticks, CO TORQUE CONVERTER LOCKOUT The rebuild of your transmission depends on whether you can trust a local rebuilder. cerberusiam, McDonough, GA My understanding is that the least expensive repair for what I might have is: • • • • Replace governor pressure transducer Replace governor pressure solenoid Replace torque converter clutch pack Replace overdrive clutch pack wyatt1672, Ball Ground, GA The least expensive thing you can do for the shifting is the governor pressure transducer and governor pressure solenoid. There is only one governor pressure solenoid; the other solenoids are for lockup and overdrive. The torque converter will need replacement or rebuild. It takes a machine shop with knowledge to do it. If you remove the overdrive unit to rebuild the overdrive clutches, you need to rebuild the overdrive direct clutch pack also. Reassembling it will likely require shimming different than original which takes knowledge and parts to do that right as it is not a direct bolt-on application. With the miles on your transmission, it will likely require some hard parts replacement with a rebuild. My '01 Turbo Diesel with almost 300,000 miles with the original transmission has a long delay before shifting gears. It also has developed a heavy shudder under hard acceleration or when towing. The shudder feels the same as if I am pumping the accelerator. I had the transmission fluid flushed and the bands adjusted, but there was no change. I read other posts on this forum that sounded like the same problem. The Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS) noise isolator was the recommended repair. wyatt1672, Ball Ground, GA The governor solenoid and governor pressure transducer are around $100. The torque converter can be rebuilt with a billet cover, lower stall heavier sprag, new clutch lining and updates for around $600 which may solve your problem, but without solid diagnostics and pressure tests there is no way to say for sure. Both the parts and the torque converter rebuild can be accessed locally in Forest Park, Georgia. A solid rebuilt transmission with some updates is around $4000. You can have that done locally in Griffin, Georgia, as a carry out or truck drop off. cerberusiam, McDonough, GA Does the shudder occur in all the gears or only in one? Have you tried shifting manually through each gear? It could be the governor transducer/solenoid. DavidC, Tempe, AZ I have a better point to start from and understand better when I go to the mechanic. I can still drive the truck so I'm not sure how soon I will begin the repairs. Thanks for the information. wyatt1672, Ball Ground, GA TDR 81 www.turbodieselregister.com 27
