"Right now we're seeing the rose gold
and diamond combination in watches for
women," says Leed. "For men, steel and
rose gold." He explains that steel is used
for its durablility and the rose gold is
used for its subtlety: "It's not as flashy as
yellow gold, which kind of 'pops out.' For
men, the rose gold is more comfortable
to wear."
In 2014, expect to see models that
offer new features, styles, and shapes.
Luxury men's brands of the moment, according to Leed, are Breguet's Classique,
Type XX, Type XXI, and Marine series, as
well as Vacheron Constantin's Patrimony and Cartier's Calibre de Cartier and
Tank models.
"Most of the people [who] shop with
us own multiple watches; men have a
tendency to collect in a greater way. One
client has 500 watches. It is fun to see
people develop a watch collection—it's
wonderful to be a part of that."
Dominic Venuti of DeScenza Diamonds, a family-owned jewelry retailer
with four locations across Massachusetts,
studied watchmaking at the North Bennet Street School and even worked as a
watchmaker's apprentice.
"I was always intrigued by the way
watches worked," he says. "I joined DeScenza in 1979 when the company was expanding its watch division. I wanted to get
into the retail aspect, to work with people.
"Young professionals
want a watch that
stands the test of time.
Oversized faces and
the stopwatch and
calendar functions are
still popular, but the
trend now is toward the
traditional—something
they can pass down."
