This Week In Purdue History Jan. 13, 1979 • In one of the most dramatic endings in Purdue basketball history, Arnette Hallman sinks a 25-foot jumper in the last second to defeat No. 1 Michigan State 52-50. It was only Hallman's second basket of the game, as the junior forward was known more for his defensive skills. He held Michigan State's Magic Johnson to 4-of-11 shooting and just nine points. The victory helped the Boilermakers tie the eventual national champion Spartans for the Big Ten crown. Jan. 12, 2010 • Robbie Hummel ties a Purdue record for made three-pointers with eight (all in the first half). The junior forward produced the greatest three-point barrage in Purdue history, nailing six of his treys in the final six minutes of the first half. Hummel ended with a career-high 35 points, but it wasn't enough as Ohio State rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit for a stunning 70-66 win. Jan. 12, 2012 • The 17th-ranked Boilermaker women set a school record with 15 made threepointers in a 72-55 win at Minnesota. Brittany Rayburn nailed a school-record 12 of them as all of her 16 field goal attempts came from beyond the arc in her 38-point effort. That point total was the third-highest figure in school history. But, for this young team, it's also an "effort" issue to prepare for an opponent and understand what's expected in terms of scouting report and being mentally ready to play a game, especially in some tough venues on the road. "We're going to go to Illinois, and it's loud," Painter said. "For us, it's to get that (effort matters) and get our guys to understand we won a game but we also won a game at home. Going on the road in the Big Ten is a tough task. "This team has to learn to not beat themselves. When we don't beat ourselves and don't take ill- advised shots, we're pretty efficient because we have good balance with quickness and skill and size. Hopefully we can learn some lessons from that Minnesota game and play better in Champaign." j TWEET A Plus Or A Minus? Plus/minus is a staple of hockey statistics, but in basketball it is often debated by stat gurus like Ken Pomeroy, who examine what it really measures. The figures below show how Purdue, as a team, fared when an individual was in the game.
