Sit tight for a busy year ahead
In this first issue of 2014, we take
a look at plausible travel trends for
the year and feature some of the
technological solutions that Abacus,
Amadeus and Travelport intend to
roll out in the coming 12 months.
We also focus our attention to
the Malaysian travel industry and
highlight some key market trends.
While we are on that note,
Uber, the software technology
company that connects drivers
and riders, made its debut in the
Malaysian market via Kuala Lumpur
in late October 2013.
Some of the main reasons
why the firm decided to come
to Kuala Lumpur included the
fact that the city has a high
smartphone penetration, which is

■
rapidly climbing month on month.
In addition, it felt that Malaysians
are comfortable adopters of new
technology and are very open to
trying new concepts.
The firm has ambitions plans for
not only Malaysia, but the whole
of Asia. According to Mike Brown,
the regional General Manager of
Uber in Southeast Asia, the firm
aims to connect riders to drivers
through their apps across Asia
and in the process make Asian
cities more accessible. To support
its growth in 2014, it is hiring
in Auckland, Bangkok, Beijing,
Chennai, Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur,
Manila, Mumbai, Seoul, Shanghai and
Shenzhen.
Exciting times ahead. Stay tuned.

Design Award 2013 in Singapore,
as well as the RIBA Lubetkin Prize
in the United Kingdom for best
new international building of 2013.
While most of the awards we have
garnered so far relate to design,
architecture and engineering, the
Thea Award honours creative
excellence in the attractions
and entertainment arena. It is a
wonderful recognition of the team's
hard work, since opening in June
