the quarterly magazine of ILTA 21 Peer to Peer CASE STUdIES • First and foremost, everyone should set goals. • I read for one hour every day about a specific area I wish to study. If you read about a topic for one hour every day, you will become an expert in five years. I recommend reading John Maxwell's "Thinking for a Change." • I also teach. I find that I learn by teaching others what I know, which also helps in delegating functions. • My staff and I rotate functions. Every two or three weeks we switch support and engineering duties in the different areas of my division. This helps keep things dynamic, and we learn new skills from each other. In addition, when someone is out, anyone else can easily take over other duties. • We also hold monthly department cross-training meetings. Each month we have a department meeting where the IT director and management update staff. We pick a topic and a presenter and go over it with everyone so that we can better understand and support that technology. I encourage all of my team to take advantage of professional associations (yes, ILTA is on that list). I make sure that they are aware of events, conferences, etc. Plus, I encourage them to make the time to participate. We talk about which groups and conferences they would like to take part in at the beginning of each year, and part of their annual evaluation is based on that participation. I am part of the knowledge management group at a law firm, and to help support the professional development of my group, I manage a knowledge library on our group's SharePoint page. I post information useful to those in the legal KM industry by providing links to relevant articles, newsletters, ILTA discussion threads, free webinars and interesting sites.
