Destinations in Deutschland A quiz on Catholic things under the patron- age of the "Doctor of Prayer," St. Teresa of Avila. For each question there is one right answer, but the answer for one question is "None of the Above." Oberammergau, Germany, is famous for the Passion play performed there. Our first three questions will be about the play. 1. Why has this play been per - formed since 1633? A. The village church was destroyed by an earthquake, and the townsfolk first put on a play to raise money to rebuild the church. Its popularity led to its continuance. B. With many of the men from the town involved in the Thirty Years War, the women organized a Passion Play to beg God's safe return of their husbands and sons. The play was continued in thanksgiving after the war ended. C. The plague reached the village and the citizens there vowed to perform a play regu- larly thereafter if they were spared from the plague. The plague ended and the play has been performed ever since. 2. When is the play performed? A. There is a performance Tuesday and Friday during each week of Lent. B. It is performed every seven years each day except Sunday during the summer. C. Every leap year the play's performances begin on Feb. 29 and continues for 30 days. 3. From where is the cast for the Passion play drawn? A. Any native speaking German may audition for a part. B. The play has become international, at- tracting actors from around the world. C. The entire cast comes from the town of Oberammergau. 4. A wandering, pious peddler and his wife became aware through revelations that they were to build a chapel in honor of Our Lady in the region of Kevelaer. The husband heard a voice telling him on three different occasions to build a chapel at a place he frequently prayed. What was this place? A. A well where he drew water each day on his way home from peddling his wares. B. A crucifix that had been erected in a field between two towns he frequented. C. The entrance to a mine shaft where a small representation of the Blessed Mother had been carved into the rock above the opening. BY PETER WESTHOFF 1. C, 2. None of the Above - It is performed every year that ends in a zero from March to October. 3. C, 4. B "I give myself over to you, as your slave and dedicate my life to you, Blessed Virgin Mary. The handwriting in my own blood testifies to this. Max- imilian, the greatest of sinners." -- Maximilian, Duke of Bavaria
