Can you tell us a bit about your creative process in developing the design for the 2014 Interactive bag? Sure. I took a look at bag designs from the past several years, and they all seemed highly illustrative to me. I wanted to develop a version that was type-driven and a little more orna- mental, something with a classic feel, but still drawn by hand. You are best known for your large format chalkboard installations. What have you found to be the most memorable instal- lation location? My most memorable installation location would definitely have to be Tokyo, Japan. Last year, I was commissioned by Tommy Hilfiger to create some installs in their new TOMMY Flagship store in the Harajuku district of Tokyo. It was an amazing trip that really propelled me into a lot of the work I'm focusing on now—installations that mix type, pattern and illustration. Much of your work specializes in hand- lettering and custom typography. If you had to choose a favorite typeface, which one would it be? My favorite typeface might have to be Bodoni, a wood-type alphabet that comes in all weights and widths. What is your favorite word? Y'all. What designer or artist do you consider to be your greatest influence? I try to take inspiration from tons of different people and places, but I love Coralie Bickford- Smith's work. She mixes type and pattern so well. I don't think my work really looks like hers (you never want to rip off your idols), but I appreciate the way she blends color, pattern and type so well. Her designs are sophisticated, classic, and yet, very contemporary. Do you have a personal motto or mantra? "Live a quiet life and work with your hands." What book would you highly recommend as a must-read? Quiet by Susan Cain for all you introverts or friends-of-introverts out there. A fascinating and practical look into how half of the peo- ple on this planet see and process the world around them. Do you have a favorite website or digital destination? Someone created a tumblr called "Beyonce Palettes" which I'm obsessed with. They've extracted col- or palettes from photos of Beyonce that are floating around the Internet. It's actually quite gorgeous! What advice would you give to aspiring designers and visual storytellers? The story behind your work is what matters most. People will immediately know if you're jumping on a bandwagon or creating inauthentic work. You have to have a journey, heart, soul, and even guts behind what you do and why you do it. You won't find your story on these blogs or boards full of other people's work, I promise. I believe in you, so get out there! Can you share any other projects that you are currently working on? Sure. I've actually been taking a little break from installations at the moment and have been loving getting back into watercoloring. It's really therapeutic and my watercolors have nothing to do with typography which is refreshing! I'm also working on a book that will be coming out next fall that I'm excited to share. It's a book that will hopefully help and inspire people to create their own beautiful typography by hand, in tons of different mediums. thecontemporaryaustin.org Jones Center 700 Congress Avenue Austin, Texas 78701 Laguna Gloria 3809 West 35th Street Austin, Texas 78703 Director's Circle: Michael and Jeanne Klein, Suzanne Deal Booth and David G.
