7 29 Issue 62 / 2014 INDIE / ROCK guestlist.net HEY IT'S DERVALA! RIGHT NOW I'M JOINED BY ONE OF THE TOP TEN NEW ARTIST TO WATCH THIS YEAR, THIS IS ALECS, HOW ARE YOU? I'm good how are you? I'M GOOD. SO CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? Yeah I'm based here in London. I'm 20. I write my own stuff, it's all kind of R'n'B and pop stuff. AND WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? I grew up between West London and Sussex I was back and forth. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EP THE FULHAM TAPES? IT WAS OFFICIALLY RELEASED TODAY, RIGHT? Yeah it was released at midnight today, or last night. So it's on ITunes now, you could stream it for a while now on Soundcloud. But yeah you can now download it on ITunes. HOW EXCITING, AND THEY'RE ABOUT THE HAPPENING OF A RELATIONSHIP RIGHT? Yeah, I mean I didn't write them to happen that way it just happened that the three best songs that I wrote around that time worked like that. So it goes from when you're really happy to when you're kind of a bit suspicious and then when it's just awful. SO IT'S A GOOD BREAK UP MIX? Yeah definitely, listen to the first track if you want to be happy and listen to the third track if you want to be sad. "GIVE IT UP" WAS PLAYED ON GARY CROWLEY'S BBC INTRODUCING SHOW, THAT MUST HAVE BEEN REALLY EXCITING HEARING YOUR SINGLE ON THE RADIO? Yeah that was quite cool actually, I did a phone interview with him, for the same show, I think it was the second show he played it. Yeah, it was cool, it was weird, it was definitely strange. I don't have a car or anything so I had to stream it but yeah it was different. Listening to the music was fine because I had to hear it again and again when I was mastering it but when I heard my voice, I said "is that me? Is that really me?" MUST HAVE BEEN REALLY EXCITING? Yeah it was cool, he's a nice guy. SO YOU WERE SCREAMING AT EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE "SHUT UP I'M ON THE RADIO!"? Yeah. Everyone was tuned in, my grandma, my granddad… YOUR SINGLE "GIVE IT UP" HAS BEEN ONLINE FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS AND IT'S GOT OVER 15 000 VIEWS THAT'S FANTASTIC. Your single "Give it Up" has been online for the last few months and it's got over 15 000 views that's fantastic. It's going well, I think it's about 25 now, 25 000 plays. It was a bit unexpected it was the first track that I had actually done properly, I mixed it, got it mastered. And it was unexpected! A couple of blogs picked it up and they were really nice about it and then other blogs picked it up from those blogs and it was all a bit sudden. One day I had like a thousand plays over a month and then suddenly the next morning it was on 10,000, so I was like what happened last night? But it was cool. HOW WOULD DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE IN MUSIC? It's like the Weekend but not as cool. WOULD THEY BE ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS? Definitely, I was listening to a lot of the Weekend, a lot of Frank Ocean and I was also listening to a lot of pop at the time as well, when I was writing so it's kind of in-between. My main instrument is guitar so, there's a lot more guitar coming through the EP, especially with the last track of the EP. WHAT HAVE YOU GOT COMING UP THIS YEAR? WHAT CAN YOUR FANS LOOK FORWARDS TO? Well I just released a short film to go with the EP, little clips for each track mixed together starring two lovely girls Joni Kamen and Paloma Oakenfold. And it turned out very nice. It was directed by Harry Hitchens, it looks beautiful. Hopefully in about May we will be releasing the next single which I'm really excited about, cause I actually like it, and I don't usually like my music so, I'm excited about that. THAT'S STRANGE YOU DON'T LIKE YOUR OWN MUSIC AND IT'S SO GOOD. I think what happens is, when you're writing, mixing it and then mastering it, and it's like a four or five months process, imagine hearing a song that much. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD? TO YOUR FANS? Thanks for the support so far, thanks for all the listens, for all the plays. I hope you'll like the video and I hope you'll like the new single when it comes out.
