30 INDIE / ROCK guestlist.net Issue 62 / 2014 ARTIST OF THE MONTH DAMON ALBARN The iconic jack-of-all-tradesman behind Gorillaz and at front of Blur releases his highly anticipated debut solo album. OUR PLAYLIST Tighten Up The Black Keys Bodysnatchers Radiohead Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle Nirvana Lights Out, Words Gone Bombay Bicycle Club Here's the Indie on our playlist this month: ALBUM OF THE MONTH THE PIXIES - 'INDY CINDIE' TRACK OF THE MONTH ROYAL BLOOD - LITTLE MONSTER It's been a reliably turbulent past year for Pixies. Original bassist Kim Deal quit in July; only for her replacement Kim Shattuck to be fired months later, back-dropped by the band drip-feeding their first new material for two decades across the winter - and this month, Pixies officially cement their long-awaited studio comeback with the album 'Indie Cindy'. The influential American grunge-surfer's first LP release for 23 years, Indie Cindy compiles EP's 1, 2 and 3 into a full length, twelve-song record; and while it doesn't quite hit the heights of their 80s heyday, it still proves a worthy successor to their original material. 'Bagboy' is as good as anything they've ever done, with 'Jaime Bravo', 'Another Toe In The Ocean' and 'Blue Eyed Hex' among the albums other highlights. A welcome return to the alternative scene for one of it's most cherised bands. This month, the acclaimed forefathers of grunge seal their comeback with their first new album for 23 years. With a BBC Sound of 2014 nomination, Radio 1 endorsement from Zane Lowe, and a support slot for Arctic Monkeys at this summer's Finsbury Park shows, it's impossible to ignore the growing buzz surrounding Sussex duo Royal Blood. They've built a reputation on an uncompromisingly loud and old school sound; metal riffs with a bluesy lick - and going on Little Monster, the anticipation is entirely justified. Exchanging between Mike Kerr's brutal hard rock riff and drummer Ben Thatcher's pounding, Bonhamesque rhythm, complete with a swaggering, racy chorus to make Josh Homme proud - "I've got love on my fingers/lust on my tongue" – and all set in the classic loud/quiet/loud grunge template, it makes Royal Blood an absolute must see at this summer's festival season, and one to watch for 2014. Royal Blood arrive 2014 riding a grow- ing wave of hype – and for once the buzz may well be justified. It's fair to say Damon Albarn's kept himself pretty busy over the last few years. If he hasn't been releasing records with Gorillaz, he's been reuniting Blur for Festival headlin- ers and mammoth gigs. If he hasn't been recording Opera soundtracks to Monkey: Journey to the West and Dr Dee, he's been collaborating with the likes of Flea for Rocket Juice & the Moon or Tony Allen and Paul Simonon for The Good, The Bad & The Queen. But the iconic Blur frontman is back (as if he ever went away...) with his long-awaited debut solo effort 'Everyday Robots', marked for release on the 28th of this month. With festival appearances booked across the summer, including sets at Fiji Rock, Roskilde and Rock Werchter, and a headlining slot at Latitude, Al- barn's upcoming release is not one to be missed.
