HORIZONTAL BEARINGS ON CONDITIONER – OLYMPIA 1. Remove the conditioner to make this job much easier. 2. Remove the chainguard and chain. 3. Loosen the set screws and lock collars on the bearings (some bearings have separate lock collars with set screws and some bearings just have set screws and no lock collars). 4. Remove all the bolts holding the two bearings onto the conditioner, being careful to prop the auger to prevent it from falling out and hitting something. Remove the auger from the conditioner. 5. Remove the old bearings. Clean the shaft. If the shaft is worn out, replace the auger. 6. Clean out the bearing area inside the conditioner. 7. Straighten out the auger if it has bent areas. 8. Check the chain sprocket. If the sprocket or chain are worn out, replace them. 9. Install the new bearings, being careful not to damage the bearing. 10. If the machine has the remote grease tubes, remove the grease zerk and install the tubes on the new bearings. 11. Install the auger back into the conditioner and bolt the bearings into place, leaving the bolts snug but not tight. 12. Run a string across the bottom of the conditioner and adjust the height of the auger to 1/16" to 1/8" above the string at the lowest point of the auger (check the Olympia manual). 13. Tighten the bolts on the bearings when the auger height is adjusted. 14. Spin the auger to make sure everything is moving freely. Reinstall the chain and chainguard. 15. Install conditioner back on machine. 16. Log the hours on the machine and make notes in the ice resurfacer logbook. Here are some extra tools to have handy for this job: hammer, pry bars, wheel- puller, allen wrenches that work with a ratchet, large socket for pushing the shaft through the bearing, pipe with inside diameter larger than the auger shaft to install new bearings, WD40, anti-seize. In the next issue, we'll tackle the vertical auger bearings. For more information on this process, contact your ice resurfacer manufacturer or dealer.
