Brooke Henderson had a great week in at the LPGA's Manulife Finan- cial Classic in Waterloo, Ontario, making the cut for the fourth time in six LPGA events. The 16-year-old Smiths Falls/Rideau Lakes was 1-under after the first two rounds after shooting a 71 and a 70. The cut was 2-over. On the weekend, she shot a 2-under 69 Satur- day and a 3-under 68 Sunday to finish tied for 45th. Inbee Park was the winner, shooting 23- under. Last year, Henderson finished the same tourna- ment tied for 35th at 10- under. Next up for Henderson is the U.S. Women's Open June 19-22 at Pine- hurst No. 2 in North Car- olina. It will be her fourth LPGA major tournament. She also played in the 2013 U.S. Women's Open and this year's Kraft Nabisco Champi- onship earlier this year. She is currently the No. 3 ranked female amateur in the world according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings. 10 – June 12, 2014 The Review-Mirror Caleb Rice, left, Maddie Morris and Scott Raison were honored as Rideau District High School's athletes of the year at last Friday's banquet. Alex Ethier, at right just completing a hurdle, was third in her heat at OFSAA. The Newboro Sappers and Miners headed to See- ley's Bay last Tuesday night to make up their men's fastball league game rained out early in the season. The bats were hot early and Newboro got to the Bay's pitcher. Jarrett Williams hit a two-run homer early and Randy Williams added two home run shots to the scoresheet, the second a mammoth bomb into the trees. The statistician is look- ing into league history to see if this is the first father/son to hit a home run in the same game. Jeff Rice pitched a strong six innings for the 7-3 win. Chris Bresee entered the game in the seventh to make his season debut for Newboro. On Thursday night at home, new league entry, the Easton's Corners Hay- makers visited Newboro. The Miners weren't very good hosts as they took it to the young squad. Mike Prevost had a big night at the plate, hitting a home run and a double. Skylar Hudson chipped in with a couple of hits and rookie Chad Baker hit a triple. Once again, Jeff Rice picked up the win in another strong outing, get- ting a shut out in this one. On Sunday, Newboro headed to Lyn for a twin- bill against Domville and Lyn. In the first game, Newboro faced the Domville Aces, a team that had just lost to Lyn and had their number one pitcher injured so they were coming in a little short. Newboro made them pay as they scored runs in all five innings to beat the Aces in a mercy rule short- ened game. The big hit was a towering blast to left by Chad Baker, his first home run in the league. Jeff Rice pitched a solid game for the win to run his record to 4-0. Next up was a match against undefeated Lyn. Marcus Rice pitched this game, firing seven solid innings. Unfortunately, the Newboro bats couldn't get going and they could only muster one run in a 4-1 loss. This leaves the Miners with an overall record of 4-1, good for second place behind Lyn. Next up is a home game this Thursday against Seeley's Bay. Blain Wells scored the opening goal of the game after a beautiful cross- crease feed from striker Scott Ferguson. The U13s carried the play for the rest of the half but were unable to add to their lead before half time. After Quinte West knot- ted the score, Cade Helmer battled through 3 defenders in the corner and was brought down from behind, awarding the U13s with a penalty shot. The sure-footed Nick Carty has been money in the bank in the past and he made another deposit as he beat the Wolverines keep- er for a 2-1 PFC lead. The U13s continued to control most of the play until 10 minutes remained in the game when a trio of defensive breakdowns all resulted in either odd-man rushes or breakaways on which keeper Kyle Ewart was left hung out to dry. Five minutes later, the U13s found themselves down 4-2 and Quinte West hung on desperately to walk away with the win despite a flurry of offense from the U13s. The boys next take to the field at the friendly confines of Kin Park on Wednesday night.
