Smiths Falls resident Brooke Henderson ended the long first day of the Golf Association of Ontario's (GAO) Investors Group Women's Amateur Championship, July 8 at the Brampton Golf Club, leading the field of the province's best female amateurs. After beginning the day with tee times at 7:30 a.m., heavy rain and thunder- storms brought the horn out at 12:27 p.m., forcing the 79-player field into the clubhouse until they resumed at 4:46 p.m. The 16-year-old Hen- derson, had many specta- tors out to see her in action. The Team Canada member was coming off a win at the Canadian Women's Tour Ontario event and finished as the Low Amateur and in a 10th place tie at the U.S. Women's Open just last month. She got out to a good start birding two of her first four holes, but dropped back to even par after bogeys on five and six. She was forced into the clubhouse while putting on seven and even though it was a long break, it didn't seem to phase her. Henderson went back out, birdied the eighth and then added four more on the back nine to finish five- under (66). Following Henderson was another Team Canada member, Bath's Augusta James, the 2011 Women's Amateur champion. The second round of competi- tion gets under way Wednesday. Another great night of racing action in all five divisions was set to go last Saturday night at the Brockville Ontario Speed- way as the second round of the Ogilvie's Auto and Fleet Triple Crown Series was on the card, on a night that saw some fantastic racing action. The 358 Modified por- tion of the Triple Crown was on deck first as Stephane Lafrance and Luke Stewart paced the field to the start of the 50 lap event. Lafrance would jump out to the early race lead bringing Danny O'Brien to 2nd as Stewart, Kevin Bates and Ryan Arbuthnot made up the top five in the early going. But once in front O'Brien was looking to make short work of the event as he was lapping cars at will and was out of sight of the leaders as the race approached lap 35. He would cruise on to the win with Ryan Arbuthnot nipping Lafrance at the line for second while Her- rington and Bryan Rogers rounded out the top five. Portland's Joe Banks was 15th. The Rookie division is always popular at BOS and Saturday was no dif- ferent. Adam Trickey would lead the opening lap of the event after starting in the fifth spot. On lap five, Trickey continued to lead but defending track champion Quincy Roberts quickly took away the top spot bringing Westport's Joe McNichols to second, setting up another classic battle to the finish. Both Roberts and McNichols have been running partial schedules in 2014 but when they show up they put on a show as they raced wheel to wheel over the remaining 10 laps. On the final lap Roberts pulled away and would hold on for his third win of the season. McNichols recorded his third straight runner up finish. Mike Best would hold on for third while Trickey and newcomer Terry Baird would round out the top five. Lyndhurst's Ron Day had some mechanical trou- bles and did not start. The Sportsman was won by Dylan Evoy fol- lowed by Shane Pecore, Jon Mills, Jessica Powerand Jason Shipclark in the top five. The Street Stock race was won by Todd Rabbe followed by Kevin Fetter- ly Jr., Brett Horner, John Gifford and Travis Andrews in the top five. This Saturday features a full show along with the Ford Dingwall Vintage Series and a 20 lap enduro. The gathering begins at 5:30 Wednesday, July 17 at Shillington Park and is an opportunity for the club to help members meet other members at their skill level for games. "As people identify if they are beginner, inter- mediate or advanced we can establish a phone list and e-mail," said club chair, Marty Crapper. The newly refurbished courts, in the US Open colours of blue and green, opened for playing again last month after rain delayed the completion of the work. "They are beautiful. Everyone who has come on them has been super- impressed," said Crapper. The new courts came about with a partnership with the township which has leased the facility to the club which is a newly incorporated non-profit organization. Memberships provide access to the courts out- side of programed hours which includes seniors play on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Non- members can also partici- pate by paying a court fee. For more information about the club look at their website www.nctennis.ca where contact information and fees are available.
