THE HOUSE Glen Magna Farms, Danvers Renovated in the 1890s in the Colonial Revival style THE STORY The epitome of La Belle Époque–era North Shore style and summer living, Glen Magna Farms survives today as a lavish example of the Colonial Revival architectural style that was so popular as the United States moved from the 19th to the 20th century. During the War of 1812, the wealthy Salem merchant Joseph Peabody bought a farmhouse and 20 acres of land in Danvers. Although parts of the house date to 1692, it was the house's 1893 renovation and expansion by Jo- seph's granddaughter, Ellen Peabody Endicott, that brought the mansion to its full Colonial Revival grandeur. "It became one of the first country estates in America," says Wayne Eisenhauer, president of the Danvers Historical Society, which has owned the house and grounds at Glen Mag- na Farms since 1963. Guided tours of the house and gardens include lunch for visitors, who can dine in the same mansion where Presidents Taft and Cleveland were entertained. The house's Colonial Revival architecture and style are reflec ed in its symmetry, its grand columned porches, and its elegant veranda that opens onto formal gardens, which contain a breathtaking fl wers, fountains, statues, and what Eisenhauer calls "specimen trees from around the world." Inside the house is just as beautiful as its lush gardens.
