Returning for another edi- tion Totally Thames festival (previously called Thames Festival) celebrates the River Thames with a 30-day program of river-inspired events this September. Big- ger than previous years it will take place across the whole of September from Monday 1st to Tuesday Sep- tember 30th 2014 . There will be a series of events, a mix of arts, festi- val, community events, river races, regattas, foreshore archeology and environ- mental activities. The list of events include Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival, Late London: Sonic City, the Great River Race, Source to Sea, Florentijn Hofman Commission, Fire Garden by Carabosse , the Floating Cinema, Mapping London, Classic Boat Rally, Maggie Culture Crawl and many more. If you like to have fun out- side and to do variety of interesting activities, you know where to go! Misery loves comedy, or so the say- ing goes. Maybe herein lies the reason comedy does so well in the UK. Aus- tralian stand-up comedian Jim Jeffer- ies sites this as the reason he moved from Sydney to Manchester to pursue a career as a comic. Stand-up struggles in Australia, which makes sense; why would anyone choose to sit in a dark airless basement when it's so nice out- side? It turns out the sprawling cloud cover and damp grey expanses of this country create the perfect conditions for our wistfully melancholic residents to seek out laughter. After a long win- ter of indoor entertainment the sum- mer is sure to have temporarily cast out our misery and the lifeblood of com- edy along with it. So as we now say our goodbyes to the sun for a while, the Greenwich Comedy Festival returns to remind us that stand-up is back in sea- son; it's here to help you through Sep- tember, the calendar year's biggest kill joy, the month that called the cops on everyone's party and told you to put a coat on in the mornings and get back to work. The Festival is setting up in the gor- geous grounds of the National Maritime Museum. The line up offers choice se- lects from all over the stand-up spec- trum, performing on the Festival's Big Top and Little Top stages. Featuring a host of familiar faces, obscure up and comers and established industry heavy weights, the Festival has sought to cover all the bases, aiming to satisfy ev- eryone's idea of funny. The continued success of Stewart Lee's BBC Comedy Vehicle sees him leading this years bill and affirms that his stoic support base are still enraptured by his unique style of anti-comedy, though some walk-ups are sure to be thrown by Lee's dispen- sation of all things conventional. Other acts include, Buzzcocks faithful Phil Ju- pitus, American exiles Stewart Francis and Rich Hall, as well as Milton Jones, Josie Long, Stephen K Amos and many more. So, wave goodbye to sandals and wel- come in the scarves while joining the Comics of the Greenwich Comedy Fes- tival. Embrace your misery and find out just why we find it so hilarious.
