Why is pH important? pH is important because the germ killing power of chlorine varies along with pH levels. As the pH goes up the ability of chlorine to kill germs goes down. In addition, a swimmer's body has a pH of between 7.2 and 7.8 so if the pool water isn't kept in this range swimmers will start to feel irritation of their eyes and skin. The level that needs to be maintained is dependent on the interior surface of your pool. Have a look at the chart below; it contains the recommended levels for Free Chlorine, pH, Total Alkalinity and Water Hardness. Tip: Have you heard people complain often when swimming in a commercial pool that there was too much chlorine in the water? They could smell it and it irritated their eyes. It is not too much chlorine causing the problem… it's not enough. The pH will be out of balance and the chlorine in the water is struggling to control the bacteria being introduced. 20
