What is a Salt Chlorinator? A salt chlorinator put simply is a miniature liquid chlorine factory! Liquid chlorine's chemical name is Sodium Hypochlorite with Sodium being salt, therefore salt water chlorination, is a process that uses dissolved salt in the pool water. This passes through the salt chlorinator cell which uses electrolysis to break down the salt (rather than baffle you with science I won't go into explaining electrolysis. You can find out more by following this link electrolysis ). Just believe me…it works! This results in a chemical reaction which eventually produces hypochlorous acid (a weak acid solution) and sodium hypochlorite (Liquid Chlorine). So, a saltwater pool is not actually chlorine-free; it simply utilizes a chlorine generator instead of direct addition of chlorine. There are several brands of Salt chlorinators available on the market. Each one operates on a different percentage of salt. Chlorinators are equipped with a timer which enables the pool to add chlorine automatically to your pool water. The water of a salt pool is softer on the swimmer's skin. With a salt chlorinator chemical costs are lessened. Mostly they require less maintenance. Some models are self-cleaning, which means that you do not have to continually clean the cell of buildup. It is extremely important to maintain the correct amount of salt in the pool water. Running the chlorinator with not enough or too much salt can damage the cell which converts the solution to chlorine. The manufacturer's manual will give you the correct level (parts per million). Each chlorinator operates on a different percentage of salt. It should be noted that from time to time you will need to add additional chlorine at such times as heavy use. You should still test your chlorine levels on a regular basis as your chlorinator – although clever- doesn't know if you have had a large number of people or the dog has been enjoying itself in your pool. 43
