By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror An all candidates meet- ing at the Portland Legion last Wednesday repeated some of the campaign's familiar themes of debt, transparency and roads. The meeting brought together mayoralty candi- dates Robert Dunfield, Ron Holman and Donald Wills, Bastard & South Burgess candidates Paula Banks, Doug Good and Cathy Livingston and South Crosby candidates Brad Banks, Claire Gun- newick, Robert Taylor. The meeting was a fourth town hall meeting for the mayoralty candi- dates who the week before had attended meetings in Elgin, Lombardy and Newboro. Videos of the Elgin and North Crosby and Portland meetings have been avail- able on the Internet on Robert Taylor's Synergetic Research Gallery YouTube channel. They have been viewed by more than 200 people. Mayoralty candidate Don Wills has been pleased with the opportu- nity to present his ideas at the meetings. "I think the whole process was constructive in every which way you could think," said Wills whose 2010 campaign also excluded signs or advertis- ing. "There were no dag- gers. We all care about the township but we have dif- ferent views about how to achieve the best results," said Wills who would have liked more time to expand on some of the issues he thinks are important. After next Monday, it could be 'steady as she goes' or the operation of the village could see a lot of changes. "This election is very exciting compared to earli- er ones. "Acclamation is not the way it should be," said current Mayor Dan Grunig. "I know from experi- ence that four years is a long time to hold office without having the valida- tion of the public through an election," he said. A long-time Councillor, Grunig was appointed mayor in the summer of 2013 after the passing of Bill Thake, head of coun- cil since the late 1960s. His current challenger for the job, Robin Jones, took over his council seat with a by-election win last September. Whoever wins, they will be facing a council with at least three new faces around the table (see article on page 2). Before the events of the past six months at the sewage lagoon, Westport may well have seen acclamations all around. "When kept in the dark this spring about the seri- ousness of the lagoons, day after day, event after event, that was when I decided to step up and run for mayor," Jones told the audience. This last all-candidates meeting, for Ward 1 is sponsored by the Town- ships Taxpayers Associa- tion and residents from the west end of the township will take place at 7:00 p.m. Mayoralty candidates started on the all-candidate meeting circuit on Sep- tember 24 in Lansdowne which candidates from all wards attended and contin- ued with a ward 3 meeting in Rockport and Ward 2 meetings in Oak Leaf, Lyndhurst and Seeley's Bay. Those who have not attended the meetings can catch up with their ward and mayoralty candidates with unedited videos of their meetings posted on mayoralty candidate Joe Baptista's website under the about joe/latest news tab of www.joebaptista.com The latest candidate meeting in Seeley's Bay was not posted because of technical issues with the recording. At the Seeley's Bay meeting questions ranged from finding a solution to a public dock to replace the former contractors dock in Gananoque, to how to choose a deputy mayor and what to pay councilors.
