By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Township of Rideau Lakes council will have the benefit of three new councillors with the elec- tion of Claire Gunniewick, Arie Hoogenboom and Doug Good. One-term South Crosby councillor Robert Taylor was shut out by Gun- niewick's lead of 605 and the perennial popularity of Linda Carr with 551 votes. Taylor got 409 votes and last-minute candidate Brad Banks got 211. "Part of me is kind of disappointed of course but there's more than one way to make change. I'll just keep working along in my own quiet way," said Robert Taylor. In South Elmsley first time candidate Arie Hoogenboom led with 1194 votes. Veteran coun- cillor Paul Smith came third to incumbent Jeff Banks with 777 to Banks 796. In Bastard and South Burgess Portland resident and long-time cottager Doug Good took the lead with 1209 votes past Cathy Livingston, a long- time Delta volunteer and resident who was appoint- ed to council last spring. Livingston got 764 votes, a slight lead on South Elmsley resident Paula Banks whose door- to-door efforts got her 747 votes. North Crosby's incum- bents were successful in their campaigns. Ron Pol- lard led the polls with 492 votes followed by Bob Lavoie with 421. First time candidates Debbie Hutchings and Don Cooke got 352 and 240 votes each. Voters elected Robin Jones on Monday, the vil- lage's first new elected mayor since 1967 when the late Bill Thake took over the chair. Jones beat incumbent Dan Grunig, the senior councillor appointed as mayor in 2013 after the passing of Thake, by a count of 278 to 131. "I am happy with the outcome but there are going to be challenges this year and I think the public understands that," she said. "You are not in a popu- larity contest – you have to take responsibility and be accountable," Jones said. A total of 412 votes were cast from among 502 eligible voters for a turnout of 83 per cent. There will be three new faces around the council table, as expected. The only incumbent running for a council seat, Jackalyn Brady, led the polls with 310 votes. Frank Huth received 269 votes followed by Mark Parliament with 244 and Gerald Schwinghamer with 227. Brad Kirkham, whose chances were hurt after he missed the all-candidates' meeting due to a personal matter, was the odd-man out with 159 votes. After the existing coun- cil meets for the last scheduled time ni Novem- ber. The new council takes over Dec. 1. The number one priori- ty is the lagoon. "Find out what needs to be done and get it done," Jones said. Starting in December, council will start working on a strategic plan, some- thing new for the village. "There will be some changes made in the early days," Jones said. By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Leeds and the Thousand Islands electors collective- ly decided it was time for a change in councillors and leadership, when they returned just one council- lor out of six. At the end of Monday night Councilor Harold Emmons, representing Ward 1 was the only one from the present council to be re-elected. Deputy Mayor Heidi Conarroe's ambitions to become mayor got trounced in a two-way race for mayor with Joe Baptista when he captured 2766 (68.36) votes to her 1280 (31.64). On Monday evening there seemed to be collec- tive relief in the communi- ty hall in Lansdowne when Ward 2 Liz Huff support- ers found out campaign efforts since last January had paid off for her to lead the ward with 821 votes (22.17). Another first-time can- didate, John Paul Jackson, worked hard and with a door-to-door campaign got the support of 669 (29.03) of votes cast in the ward. Jackson also phoned half of the 1200 or so sea- sonal residents and discov- ered many didn't realize they had the right to vote. "Sadly most threw out their (voting) kits," said Jackson.
