OUR PLAYLIST Golden Goals Bas Wailin' Outkast Rockie Fresh Panera Bread Feat. Rick Ross & Lunice 6 Words Wretch 32 Here's the hip hop on our playlist this month: Cooly G's second album, 'Wait Til Night', released this month on Hyperdub, is a sleek and seductive collection of late-night, lo- fi tunes. Featuring Cooly on both vocals and production, the tracks explore the artist's sexuality, her fantasies and ruminations, with a crooning voice and suggestive lyrics set against luscious electronic backdrops. As expected, Cooly's tracks are impeccably produced, with the artist drawing on her eclectic influences throughout. In the title track of the album, 'Wait Til Night', galactic synths punctuate Cooly's seductive, chromatic vocals. Harder-edged tracks such as 'So Deep' combine deep trap beats with sparse, grime-like snares and metallic string samples. Understated, intimate, soulful: Cooly G's latest offering is well worth a listen. (Anna) ALBUM OF THE MONTH COOLY G - WAIT TIL NIGHT A masterful mix of sleek vocals with elements of soul, RnB, garage, UK funky and more, Cooly G's latest album is well worth a listen. ARTIST OF THE MONTH AB-SOUL Another great West Coast rapper making waves globally HIP HOP LEGENDS MOS DEF Mos Def's classic "Black on Both Sides" is 15 years old this year Although he never quite achieved the mainstream success of other 90's rap- pers like Tupac, Biggie, or Big Pun, Mos Def is a highly influential and respected artist, and nowhere is this more apparent than on his masterpiece 'Black on Both Sides'. Mostly reject- ing the slightly simplistic and tired themes of guns, drugs, and money, Mos Def decided to address issues of racism, both on an indi- vidual basis and in the form of institutionalised govern- ment racism. Few artists have managed to create socially concious hip hop of this quality that is also ca- pable of getting a room full of heads bobbing. A great example of this is his an- them 'Mathematics', featur- ing extremely potent lyrical imagery, complex rhymes, and a beat so heavy it's al- most like being punched in the face. To mark the 15th anniversary of this incred- ible album, Mos Def will be embarking on a tour during which he will play the album in its entirety and, lucky us, it will be coming to the UK. Don't miss out on this op- portunity to see a legitimate hip hop god! 2014 has been a big year for Ab-Soul, with the release of his latest full length album 'These Days...' back in August and the rumoured beginnings of recording a debut full length for his much hyped supergroup Black Hippy, also featuring Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q. In recent years Ab-Soul has racked up an impressive list of collaborations, doing tracks with Vic Mensa, Danny Brown, Mac Miller, Action Bronson, and many more. Ab-Soul has gained significant notoriety for his masterful flow and thoughtful subject matter, such as the worlds most powerful psychedelic drug, racism, and the government. One thing is for certain, and that's if you consider yourself a Hip Hop head, you'll be keeping Ab-Soul and his Black Hippy project on your radar. 16 Issue 68 / 2014 HIPHOP / RNB guestlist.net More @ guestlist.net/rnb-hiphop
