Making a splash in paris is
Hotel Molitor on the edge of the
16th arrondissement.
The ocean liner–inspired complex
was inaugurated in 1929 by two
olympic swimmers, one of whom
was Johnny Weissmuller, who later

starred as Tarzan. it became the most
popular swimming baths
in paris.
The bikini debuted here in 1946,
and you can thank the Molitor for the
topless trend, born in 1968.
if you've read Yann Martel's Life
of pi, you may remember that the
novel's hero, piscine Molitor patel,
or pi, was named for the pool; its
water was "so clear, you could make
your morning coffee with it."
But in 1989 the complex closed
and, left derelict, became an urban
art venue, covered in graffiti.
now, after a $100m investment
from Colony Capital, the 5-star
Mgallery Molitor has been
resurrected. Today's Molitor has
faithfully replicated its two summer
and winter pools, as well as the
canary-yellow walls and blue
changing-room doors, and added a
restaurant, a spa by Clarins, private
club and a rooftop garden terrace
with views of the Eiffel Tower.
Most of whose 124 rooms in the
new hotel have pool-facing portholes
for people-watching.
The lobby includes a graffiti-
splattered Rolls-Royce.
