By Ian Jarrett QATAR TOURISM TO OPEN OFFICES IN ASIA Qatar Tourism Authority is making a big marketing push in Asia with the opening of offices in Singapore this year and China in the second quarter 2015. Qatar is keen to push its credentials as both a leisure and MICE destination. Some 124,000 visitors from Asia visited in the first six months of this year. In total, January to June international visitor numbers reached 1.42 million. More than half a million GCC nationals (536,264) visited Qatar during this period, representing around 38% of tourists. Overall, Qatar reported 8% growth in international visitor arrivals and a 7% rise in hotel occupancy. During the same period, the average hotel occupancy rate rose to 74% from 67% last year, assisted by a 1.9% decrease in available rooms due to renovation-related closures. Currently Qatar has 155 hotels, of which 37 are classed as five stars. By 2022 that number will lift to 250 hotels. India and Malaysia are the leading tourism source markets for Qatar country's location and accessibility, and direct flights to more than 140 cities around the world through the Qatar Airways network.
