Queen`s scientists and the Ministry of the Envi- ronment and Climate Change will be presenting information on Portland groundwater research on Wednesday, November 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Ministry of the Environment funded a study by academic researchers which con- cluded that in the village of Portland potability of groundwater resources on a larger scale was unlikely to be captured with infre- quent domestic well sam- pling. Monitoring wells were sampled over a three-year period at a variety of depths on a wide variety of parameter. The study suggested to researchers that fecal pol- lution could be every- where in the village of Portland along with traces of pharmaceuticals and personal care products. The meeting comes after months of insistence and multiple letters by the Township of Rideau Lakes for the MOE to provide information to the public on groundwater condi- tions. Wednesday`s meeting will include a presentation by the MOE, the public health unit and one by Dr. Kent Novakowski, head of the Civil Engineering Department at Queen's. Reporting on the study to the public comes many years later than promised in the researcher's agree- ment with the MOE. It states that "annual stake holder meetings and public consultation in the Village of Portland shall be held to ensure that these broader communities are kept up-to-date with the project findings". In Lyndhurst the Christmas season starts with a visit from Santa Claus in the annu- al parade. Participation in this year's parade, including the Celtic Grinches motorcy- cle club, and the number of spectators was up from recent years. See back page for more.
