Mr. Wondah Gets the Ins and Outs of Wretch 32's Movements and Musical Philosophies Wretch 32 who has been ear marked by BBC has one to watch of 2011 along with being hotly tipped my NME, MTV, HMV as a rising star. He has gone onto win a host of awards most notably the BET award for best international act. His gave us hit tracks like 'Tracta', 'Unorthodox', 'Doing OK' 'Blackout' and of course his runaway hit 'Don't Go' that debuted at No.1 on the UK singles chart racking up an excess of 10 million views on YouTube. He has led a national TV advertising campaign for Adidas in support of the 2012 Olympics. SO WHAT'S GWARNING, I KNOW YOU GOT THAT NEW SINGLE 'SIX WORDS'. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? People are saying 'Rappers starting singing now' but I say 'Hold on a second, if you listen to 'Tracta' and you hear the man drop it, you understand. It's just expanding your creativity. I've grown up listening to Garnet Silk; I'm listening to Beanie Man, Bouncy Killer. I hear Beanie man rap on a tune and I hear him sing ' I'm drinking rum and red bull' and he's got two sides to him, so when I'm listening to that, it's installed in me. So whenever I get the chance to express it, I'm paying homage to my heritage. SO, THE NEW ALBUMS COMING OUT SOON. HOW CLOSE TO DELIVERY IS THAT ONE NOW? It's finished man, we're just selecting dates. OK COOL, WELL YOU'VE GIVEN US SOME TASTER SINGLES THOUGH LIKE 'BLACKOUT'. GIVEN THE CREATIVE ISSUE ROUND THAT TRACK OBVIOUSLY SHAKKA HE REPRESENTS ON THAT TUNE. I've been a big fan of Shakka for the longest and always wanted to get in with him. When the opportunity arose on this record to get his blessing on everything and for him to come through was a big thing. I wouldn't say I've got a sound, I've got a mood and I've got a vibe. I need each song to be different and to be pushing boundaries and to be pushing myself. 'YOU DOING OK' FEATURING JACOBS BANKS CLOCKED UP AN EXCESS OF HALF A MILLION VIEWS ON YOUTUBE AGAIN THAT VIDEO LOOKED LIKE IT WAS SHOT SOMEWHERE IN AFRICA. WHAT WAS THE CREATIVE VISION BEHIND THAT TRACK AND OBVIOUSLY THE VIDEO ITSELF? The records about doing ok and I wanted to express what I mean by that because there's some people in the world that have the least but still have the most. So I just wanted to go somewhere where that resonates in the video. I know when some people listen to the track they're like 'Of course your doing ok' but what I'm actually talking about is cherishing stuff you can't buy, you can't obtain, like your health is your wealth. YOU'RE GETTING ACCLAIMED BY PEOPLE LIKE JAY-Z, NICKI MINAJ. DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL ANY ADDED PRESSURE TO DELIVER? N ah coz I've always had confidence in my ability and I think even using somebody like Shakka, as an example, he is incredible. Anybody who hears him and sees him live is gonna appreciate. Shakka is in a smaller position than me so that's why it takes somebody like me to do that record, to help bring him to the bigger audience. If somebody like Kanye hears myself or hears 'Six Words', he's going to like it. If Chris Martin hears 'Six Words' he's going to like it. Sometimes it's about musicians really shouting out musicians that they like. If you go on my Twitter, you see me talking about music all day and when I hear talent that I think needs to get bigger I spread it. SO YOUR NEW SINGLE 'SIX WORDS' IS RELEASED SOON AND YOU'RE SINGING ON IT. ON THE TRACK YOU SOUND LIKE YOUR TALKING ABOUT AN INDIVIDUAL THAT'S INSPIRING, SO WHAT'S THE CREATIVE HISTORY AROUND THAT? Yeah definitely, I had the first line for years, 'I can't sing but I wrote you a song'. We was in the studio creating it, writing it and I just thought of the word treasure and when I thought of treasure and got to thinking 'What do I treasure? I treasure my kids and my music' so the record is really about my kids and my gift second. THAT'S IT FOR US REALLY. LOOKING BEYOND THE ALBUM, ANYTHING ELSE THAT IS COMING ON THE TRACK? Just look for anybody that I'm standing next to saying they're going to be renowned. We're just trying to push the best artists and I wear that on my heart!
