What can you tell us about the links Kool have with Warehouse LDN and the old rave/jungle/ DnB history of the Trading Estate where the venue is located? The relationship with the Lee Valley Trading Estate as it was called back then, started off with a small venue called BassBox. Lots of our station Djs played at this venue from around 1992, then a venue on the same estate opened up called Roller Express, which had a massive capacity. A few of our large events we held at Roller were Jungle Fever 1994 The 2nd Bite 10 June 1994 & Jungle Fever 1994 The Lion Returns 6 May 1994 these events established Roller as the venue to use for jungle events like Splash, Desert storm, Life & Utopia etc! How, why and when did Kool FM start? Kool fm started on the 28th of November 1991. It all started when Smurf had an idea to start an underground radio station. He approached Eastman and another 3rd party member to create a new partnership, after a while it was Just Smurf & Eastman that ran the station. The reason was due to a new emerging sound and no major stations supporting the underground UK music that we were listening to. There were a lot of new artists making waves across the local areas in East london at the time. Rush Fm went on to the Fm dial first then shortly after Kool went onto the Fm but were only broadcasting Friday to Sunday, then from Thursday to Sunday, then after many years of keeping that winning formula, Kool went 7 days a week and the rest is history as they say! A lot of the original Kool crew came from the UK Sound system culture and were part of a wider community of UK artists from Sound systems, DJs, selectors and mic controllers with associated sounds like Unity & Eastman Sound etc. Has the music changed since its early stages? The early music was a lot of bleeps mixed with 4 to the floor house and then hard euro techno sounds and hardcore then by 1993, hardcore jungle came through and by 1994 we were fully supplying London with the sound of Jungle. The producers were using the sounds that they grew up listening to like reggae, rare groove soul hip hop, Ragaa and were using it in their productions which gave it a certain resonance with its audience! We as a station have always provided our audience with cutting edge underground music and foundation dance roots music and will always push thing forward. Famous DJs / MCs who played on the station? Over the past 23 years we have had most of the foundation jungle artists pass through as residents or regular guests most of the Dj's & Mc's became famous through the radio! Brockie & Det, Dj Ron & Mc Navigator, Nicky Blackmarket & Mc Stevie Hyper D, Fatman D, Dj Kane, Devious D & Shabba, Mampi Swift & Ic3, Bryan G and the V records show, Funky Flirt & Foxy,P.S.G, DJ Probe & Ruffstuff, Funsta, Riddla, Marly Marl, Andy C and the Ram Crew, Dj Trace & Rhymetime, The Virus crew Ed Rush, Shy Fx,Wildchild & SkibbaDee, Remarc & Ragga Twins Dj S.L , Younghead , Maxwell D, Nikki Slim Ting (Pay As You Go Crew), Food junky,Dextrous Winston Runtings, Shockin Remade, Co-Gee!! Kool has had plenty of special guests names to do Dj / Mc sets or take part in the open forum with names like Eksman & Evil B, Goldie, Dj Marky , Mc Fats, Cleveland Watkiss, Klute, SPY! There are so many names to try and remember, even Garage & Grime artists like Dominic Spread Love, Dizze Rascal & D double E passed through to do a show or two! Maybe a famous DJ had their debut on the station? As mentioned above lots of the first wave of Junglist Dj's & Mc's passed through at one point at the start of their career like Mampi Swift and two very young Dj's who's debuted when they were just 14 years old were Crissy Criss & Logan D who have gone onto great things as Dj's, broadcasters and producers within drum and bass. Lots of other Djs that played drum and bass eventually achieved getting to play a set or host a regular show on Kool after doing all the other pirate stations earning their stripes such as Spice & Scanner ,Hoodlum & Five alive, Pappa G and the Go Getters ,Dj Sly & Mc Shaydee, Verb & Uno,Chef & Bud, Pleasure and Origin, Social Security and Uncle Dugs!
