PERFORMANCE McLeod Racing Placentia, California Fred Taylor Operations Manager Our hottest product for the 2015 Drag Racing season is … … our Soft-Lok drag racing clutch assem- bly. It represents the philosophy that we have on drag racing, and what sets us apart—that is, using a lower-pressure pressure plate. It features a 200- pound pressure plate with sintered iron disc. Its best features include … … that it doesn't shock the tire so much. It is adjustable from 200 to 1,800 pounds. For customers using our Soft-Lok, typi- cally we tell them to take the single-disc and turn it up 10 rounds, and then make three or four passes, since they aren't yet at maximum holding power. Then we ask them to start dropping the pressure, maybe two turns at a time. We tell them to check their 60-foot times, and if (the adjustment) doesn't do anything, or if their times get better, then take another turn out. The philosophy is to keep dropping pressure until you find the quickest 60-foot time. We want to see how low you can go! Of course, when pressures are really, really low, it does create other issues. Counterweights can be used to stabilize the top end, and the rpm that they leave Shops with insider knowledge— such as understanding drag racing applications that can benefit from a lighter, traditional road racing clutch assembly—can become irreplaceable resources for their customers.
