52 n Performance & Hotrod Business n February 2015 HOTROD M etal fabrication is the foundation of custom car building, whether it's a "numbers correct" classic restoration, resto-mod Kustom, hot rod, rat rod, truck, diesel or EV. And at the foundation of metal fabrication are the everyday tools and equipment needed to cut, form and connect the variety of metal components that go into the building process—along with the skills needed to make that equipment work. PHB recently asked a few manufacturers and suppliers to provide an overview of the equipment that's currently available—with the needs of custom car builders in mind. Here are a few highlights… Jerry Kroetch Scotchman Industries Philip, S.D. PHB: What are Scotchman's most popu- lar metal fabrication tools for use in hotrod and engine building shops? Jerry Kroetch: Scotchman has several different machines that are valuable to hot rod fabricators. First is a hydraulic iron- worker, a multiple-use fabrication machine that can punch, shear, notch and bend mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum. The second machine is a circular cold saw, which can cut mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum with precision accu- racy to within ±.002 per diameter inch, almost burr-free with a milled finish. The third machine is a tube- and pipe-notching machine that will allow straight 90-degree notches up to 30 degrees and give a preci- sion fit.
