Township of Rideau Lakes staff and politi- cians are still scratching their heads to know how to proceed with a con- tract for OPP services for 2015 and beyond. A new funding model from the province for ser- vices will be placing new demands on taxpayers to come up with more than $300,000 more for polic- ing services this year, and another $300,000 in 2016. Rideau Lakes has tra- ditionally had a police services board and a con- tract with the OPP for a specified level of service which included details of the number of officers serving the municipality from the detachment in Lombardy. A copy of the new contract gave no such assurances of what was going to be offered by the OPP, including officers working out of the Lom- bardy detachment. "It doesn't' give you contractual assurance there are certain service levels including the use of detachment. Councillors last week agreed to keep a civilian administrator at the detachment as an enhancement, a DAC, a move which they thought would assure that the detachment would be kept open. "It sheds a whole new light on council's deci- sion. One of the factors for keeping the DAC there was we felt the offi- cers would start there," said Mayor Ron Holman. Successive thaws in January roughened and then smoothed the ice just in time for the races last Saturday. "After the thaw last week leveled the ice our prep crew had an easy job preparing the one km oval. By the time the 5K race got underway on Saturday morning the surface on the oval shone like a mirror," said Portland Outdoors President John Bongers. The surface was not without its issues as the day progressed when com- petitors took care to avoid cracks which had opened up due to the extremely cold temperatures earlier in the week. In the first race of the day Paul McCloskey took the 5k in 11:40 followed by Jake Marse in 11:41 with Chloe Goss taking it for the women in 16:04 almost 2 minutes ahead of Emma Wheeler! After warming up in the 5 k, Jake Marse easily won the 10k in 24:04 followed 3 minutes later by Marc Baillon. Heidi Hatch, sore knee and all, held the lead for the women in 31:16 coming in a half second ahead of Jan Zwaan. The 25-kilometer marathon was easily taken by Adrian Loewen with a time of 55:02, seven min- utes ahead of Dusan Hoferek. Jen Benediktson and Melanie Hundt placed very well in the women's category with a time of 1:07:39 and 1:09:11 respectively. The fastest lap times of the day were reserved for the 50 k marathon with Sergio Almerella flying around the oval in The community will be coming together this Fri- day in support of a young Westport teenager in hos- pital in Toronto. Eve Ewart was feeling ill before taking a serious turn on Jan. 16 at their Cty. Rd. 10 home. She ended up in Ottawa at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario where they discovered a mass in her liver. The grade 8 RDHS stu- dent was there for a week before being airlifted to Toronto this past weekend, along with her mother Kim. Her father Brian Ewart and younger twin brothers Wes and Will have been making the trip back and forth to Ottawa during that week and now the whole family faces spending some time in Toronto. This Friday, friends and family are holding a town- wide walk starting from the parking lot of Kudrinko's Country Gro- cer. Donation drop off and sign-up starts at 6:30 p.m. with the walk leaving at 7 p.m. Several other efforts to raise funds are underway and donation jars are set up at a number of West- port businesses.
