What's been going on since New Year? This year started off the same way as last year with a trip to the BPM festival in Playa Del Carmen. I played two shows in the week I was the there, first the Saved showcase at Blue Parrot and then for the Planet-e vs Cadenza party at Mamitas. Other fun gigs since then include Saved's return to London at Fire and also at La Belle Angele in Edinburgh. I've also been working on a mix compilation for DFTD which will feature my favourite tracks from the back catalogue along with something exclusive from myself. Your brother obviously had some influence on you to a degree but listening to the recent Cadenza podcast, it shows how deep your love of music goes. Tell us about your early love of music which has guided you to present day? The podcast is a great reflection and demonstrates my eclectic tastes, from listening to the Beastie Boys as a young kid to more recent music like Ghostpoet. There was so much more I wanted to add and I tried to steer away from dance music which was hard. I was listening to some music the other day and thinking that I wish I could've added this, but overall I was very happy. It was one of the most exciting mixes that I've worked on. What inspires you when you get in the studio? Listening to music, whether its something electronic or even a pop record on the radio, can be very inspiring for me as well as watching films and listening to the soundtracks they have. What projects have you got coming in 2015? I have just released a single on DFTD called 'Control', which features the vocals of Joe Le Groove and as I mentioned earlier, I am working on a mix compilation for them. I have also got a remix coming on Matthias Tanzmann's Moon Harbour imprint and soon you'll be able to get a copy of my next release on Saved. Nike or Adidas? I wear both, mainly Nike for when I'm out and Adidas for when I'm working out. What producers are you really feeling at the moment? Right now I am really feeling the output from Ejeca and Deetron. Tell us about a nightmare that you have experienced at at gig? We all have all a few... I was playing at Chinese Laundry in Sydney a few years ago and I had played literally just one record, and then all of a sudden the music stopped and a really loud pitched sound drowned the room. I automatically thought it must've been my laptop crashing, maybe it was something in the system, but I immediately rebooted everything in the booth and moved to USB sticks. I recovered well from it and had the music playing pretty quick to keep the groove flowing. If you weren't DJ'ing and producing what would you be doing? Probably working as a psychiatrist or something with numbers. Describe your career to date in 3 words? Fast, fun, exciting If you were banished to a desert island and had to take 3 famous people, who would you take and why? The first person I would pick would be Bear Grylls as I think you'd need someone who is an expert survivalist. David Attenborough would have to be there too. He is such an interesting person to listen to on his shows and would also be great for delivering knowledge on any local wildlife. I would also pick Jamie Oliver as you'd need a decent chef there too. 20 Issue 72 / 2015 HOUSE/ TECHNO guestlist.net INTERVIEW MaRk FaNcIullI DJ/producer Mark Fanciulli took time out to talk to us about podcasts, trainers and nightmare gigs.
