34 Issue 72/ 2015 INDIE/ ROCK guestlist.net We caught up with Matthew Koma for a chat about his career, performing at the iTunes festival, his involvement with his musical hero Bruce Springsteen, and his future projects Hi Matthew! Let's start by talking about your performance at the iTunes Festival last year along with Maroon 5. Were you excited to perform at the Roundhouse? It's incredible! London has always been a place that has been very welcoming to me, especially as a new artist, opening their arms early, it has always been a place that has done that. So to be part of the festival with the support of iTunes, it feels good. Your new last record was The Cherrytree Sessions which was released in 2013. Give us an insight into it. The Cherrytree Sessions are a collection of acoustic versions of songs based on collaborations with others artists. For the most part it's important to me that I am able to perform songs that are not in the context of dance music, that can stand on their own, performed just with an acoustic guitar. To release as part of the Cherrytree series, it's a good platform and opportunity to let songs speak in that way. When Mark Beech asked me if I'd be interested in being part of that series, I was flattered and I wanted to contribute. What's the next step in your career? I just finished my record, that is going to come out this year. I'm excited for people to hear my new music, it is representative of me and what came from these past couple of years. There will be a couple of more collaborations that I'm looking forward to. Kind of just be all over the map. A lot more of producing and writing for other artists who have songs and records coming out. I just want to continue down this road! I also supported RAC with 'Cheap Sunglasses', I will be doing a lot of touring and I'm really excited about it. That is gonna be lot of fun. Wearing a different hat every day, it's really nice. Bruce Springsteen released 'Rocky Ground', one of your remixes. Did you feel honoured and excited to be involved with the Wrecking Ball album? It's unbelievable. I grew up being a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, and I am still a huge fan at the moment too. To have an opportunity to do something artistically with somebody who taught you so much, there are no words for it. By far the most affective experience I have ever had. When you get respect from one of your heroes, there is no better satisfaction or gratification than that. Our readers will want to know, what is your favourite song or album? What would you recommend to them? Such a hard question! I am so involved with Springsteen, I grew up with him. He was incredible to me. I usually listen to other classics. If I have to choose one, there is a singer called Doze and he is the producer of what I consider two of the greatest records, and I'm obsessed with him. I think he is an incredible songwriter. Those are the ones I would recommend, but there is so much, I could talk about it for hours. INTERVIEW MaTThEW KoMa " I grew up being a huge Bruce Springsteen fan...To have an opportunity to do something artistically with somebody who taught you so much, there are no words for it.
