9:00 AM - 10:00 AM The Future of Higher Ed—Without the "D" Word SYSTEMIC IMPLEMENTATION & SCALE Hilton | Salon K | Panel Discussion From the unbundling of degrees to the rise (and fall?) of MOOCs, higher ed institutions around the U.S. are ripe for d_____. After years of hype, substantive change appears to be on the horizon. But what does that mean for institutional leaders and students? Can technology support faculty goals? Will families embrace the reinvention of college? Join an academic visionary, an innovation funder and a veteran higher ed journalist to explore the future of learning…all without uttering the "D" word. George Siemens, The University of Texas at Arlington, Goldie Blumenstyk, Chronicle of Higher Education, Ryan Craig, University Ventures 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Trickle Up: Organizing for Policy Innovation POLICY & FUNDING Hilton | Room 408 | Problem Solver Policy is often an afterthought for educators, something that happens to them rather than for them. Due to that mindset, some of the most innovative educators often work in silos for fear of someone disrupting their disruption. This session seeks to change that mindset and empower the disruptors among us on how to scale up their own in- novations not by venture funding, but through classic organizing principles historically shown to shape local, state and even federal policies. Russell Armstrong, U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce Science and Transportation 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM Turning Public Data into Public Knowledge POLICY & FUNDING ACC | Room 16AB | Panel Discussion | #telldata As the volume and sophistication of data collected on public schools continues to grow, public access to (and understanding of) that data has remained stagnant in most communities. Panelists from innovative organizations around the country will share how they're each using new approaches to making education performance and finance data accessible, engaging and understandable to put their cities at the fore- front of turning public data into public knowledge for driving informed policy decisions. Jason Rose, Jacksonville Public Education Fund, Natalie Brathwaite, Newark Trust For Education, Rob Steller, Achieve Hartford!, Selena Tan, Center for Edu- cation Policy Research at Harvard University 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM Visualizing Educational Data: Do's and Don'ts BIG DATA & LEARNING ANALYTICS Hilton | Salon G | Panel Discussion The growth of blended and online learning environments, as well as the range and complexity of data now available, generates an unprecedented amount of educa- tional data. Data visualization offers a range of powerful tools to help educators make sense of these complex data sets. The panel of experts will discuss the challenges and strategies in developing visualizations of educational data that are timely, useable, meaningful and actionable by teachers, students, administrators and parents. Ben Glazer, Eduvant, John Behrens, Pearson, Mark Milliron, Civitas Learning Inc, Paul Resta, The University of Texas at Austin 9:20 AM - 9:35 AM The National Language Deficit INTERNATIONAL MODELS & APPROACHES ACC | Room 15 | Future15 Only 8.6% of American college students study a language, and 95% of them are study- ing a European language. Translation? Less than 1% of American students are prepar- ing to communicate with non-Western communities at home and abroad. This is para- lyzing. It doesn't promote growth in our global economy, it's not supporting global politics and communication, and it's a major concern for our nation's security interests. We're also not preparing to engage with some of the world's poorest populations. Amelia Friedman, Student Language Exchange 9:30 AM - 10:00 AM Social Entrepreneurialism in Education ENTREPRENEURIALISM IN EDUCATION ACC | Ballroom EFG | Playground Talk With $135 and a handful of students, the Giddings High School Art Club decided to become Art Ink, a publicly educated company. We chose to create a product-oriented project, developing a plan with the goal of shifting the mission with a new strategy: social entrepreneurism. The club stopped talking about field trips and pizza parties and started asking, "How do we create meaning?" With little money or experience in business, how could we be a positive impact on our local community? Eric Mott, Giddings High School 9:40 AM - 9:55 AM Why STEM Is So Important to the Space Industry ENTREPRENEURIALISM IN EDUCATION ACC | Room 15 | Future15 As the funding of NASA has declined and technology has improved, there's been sig- nificant growth in the commercialization of space. This has ignited a huge demand for our students to possess STEM skills to fulfill these jobs. For the first time, students can have access to space creating an amazing academic experience engaging them in STEM topics. This session explores what is happening in the space industry and any teacher can give students the opportunity to send their experiment to space. Sunny Washington, Ardusat 10:00 AM - 10:15 AM A New and Virtual Environment in the Classroom GAMING & VIRTUAL LEARNING ACC | Room 15 | Future15 You may know about all the latest in technology in education, but when was the last time you heard the future of educational technology from a 9th grader, who started up his own business and has worked on lesson design and assessment in school? You'll hear what makes learning relevant to our generation and how you can help prepare us for success in the future. Technology is growing along with us, things like video games, virtual reality and skills like video editing, could shape how kids learn. Scott Nguyen, Amazing Grace Christian School 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM Creating Collaborative Environments for Students INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES & BEST PRACTICES ACC | Ballroom EFG | Playground Hands On In today's rapidly changing workplace, a student's long-term professional success will depend greatly on skills like collaboration, communication and creative problem-solv- ing. Engaging students in projects where students work as teams to produce digital media content is a great way to hone these skills. In this session, you will experience proven instructional strategies that will create a vibrant environment for this type of learning. No experience with digital media is necessary. Humberto Perez, John B Connally High School 10:20 AM - 10:35 AM Rethink and Redesign Professional Development LEADERSHIP & EMPOWERMENT ACC | Room 15 | Future15 This session offers innovative models of professional development that serve and hon- or educators in public, charter and independent schools, pre-K through university. In- stead of top-down, task-focused professional development, we will explore workshop and retreat structures that inspire and give voice to educators from diverse education settings. Participants will leave with specific models, topics and resources they can share with their schools and organizations.
