Westport Council unveiled a 'wish list' budget Monday night that would see the village take in 8.85 per cent more in municipal taxes in 2015. The first draft of the budget gives residents until the end of the month for their input, when there will also be a coun- cil meeting March 31 dedicated solely to dis- cussing the document. "This is a wish list budget, a first draft," Clerk-Treasurer Scott Bryce told council Mon- day night. "Some costs are hard, others are not," he said. The first draft shows total expenditures at $1,241,732, up $73,769 from what was spent in 2014 – an increase of 9.4 per cent. With revenues esti- mated at $599,500, that leaves $642,232 to be raised from taxes, up $52,233 from last year. But, if passed as is, it won't mean an 8.85 per cent increase on taxes. The remaining physi- cian at the CPHC family health team clinic in Westport, Dr. Amy Locke, is not obliged to retain all of Dr. Roberts' patients after he retires. It wasn't too many years ago patients were left without a doctor after the retirement of West- port physician, Dr. Brian Trickey. Some of those patients now find them- selves orphaned without a doctor again. ""I'm aware of the sit- uation that has left some patients without a prima- ry health-care provider in Westport and I share their concerns. That's why I have begun to reach out to health-care and community partners to develop a solution that addresses the needs of patients in the Westport area," said Leeds Grenville MPP Steve Clark. As of March 5, West- port's two lagoons had an available capacity of 44,200 cubic metres, com- pared to just 11,300 last March. "This is good news going forward but we are still worried about the snow and rain," Mayor Robin Jones said at Mon- day's council meeting, Last spring, the village had to get rid of 44,000 cubic metres of waste- water to keep the berm from overflowing into the village. They discharged the 12,000 cubic metre secondary lagoon into the Upper Rideau twice and trucked another 20,000. The trucking and treat- ment and some other costs totaled just under $400,000 but some associ- ated costs aren't included in that total. The goal right now is to get another 10,000 cubic metres processed before the season ends. The 14- day forecast currently shows snow could be made on eight of those nights. And then watch and wait.
