7 Issue 73 / 2015 travel guestlist.net 19 9 reasons why we love Miami In honour of Ultra Music Festival, which rolls into Miami on March 27th, we've decided to run down the best things about the city. In all honesty, the prospect of cracking weather is enough for us sun-starved Brits, but we've dug (slightly) deeper for you this time 1. Ultra Music Festival Let's get straight to it then. Ultra is huge. Massive. Colossal. For three days at the end of March, the biggest names in dance music converge on the city for one of the best festivals in the world. This year's line-up is super stacked – we actually don't have space to list all the names – including the likes of Avicii, Carl Cox, Maceo Plex, Jamie Jones, Skrillex, Marco Carola, Loco Dice, Die Antwoord, Netsky, Odesza, David Guetta, and Tiesto. 2. Beaches Ok, this one is mega obvious, but crystal clear waters, palm trees, the candy coloured art deco architecture of South Beach, it just makes you feel good. If you hit Miami at Christmas they put fairy lights on palms trees and make snowmen out of sand! And it's so damn hot that everyone wears as little as possible. There's even an old guy that rides round on his bike in just a thong. I mean, does it get better than that? 3. 'Miami' – Will Smith It's right there in the title. You can play this Will Smith banger when you arrive. You can play it when you're cruising to the beach. You can play it when you're getting ready for da club. You can play it whenever you want basically, and no one can tell you not to. 4. Drinking Cocktails AND Cuban coffee - the bevs in Miami will keep you "bouncing in the club where the heat is on, all night on the beach till the break of dawn." Yeah sorry, that's gonna be in your head for a while now. 5. Celeb spotting Many famous people – Shakira, Oprah, Lenny Kravitz - have homes in Miami, so you could conceivably spot them all around town. Imagine bumping into Ricky Martin whilst you're getting a sandwich. It's what social media was made for. 6. Scarface You can take a movie tour of locations featured in the gangster flick, or you could just whack on a wide-collared shirt, chomp on a cigar and strut down Ocean Drive like Tony Montana. Maybe leave the intense violence and drug running to Al Pacino though. 7. Culture So the beaches are hot and the nightlife is insane, but Miami is a pretty good place to get your culture on. You can explore Little Havana, visit the Viscaya mansion or hang with some manatees. Art takes over the city for four days in December as Art Basel rolls into town, and special exhibitions spring up at galleries and museums. And if you have a slightly different interpretation of art, the Swim Show, which takes place in July, displays all the latest trends in swimwear and lingerie. 8. Munchies Miami's proximity to the Caribbean means delicious, authentic food from across the region is right on your doorstep – Cubanos, fritas, Trinidadian curry roti rolls, chicharrones, the list goes on. A whole host of food trucks cruise around the city ensuring that all the party people don't go hungry. And that's not mentioning all manner of other things you can devour in Miami, like stone crabs, sushi, fried chicken, ice cream….ok so who's hungry? 9. Can we say Ultra again? It's really fun.
