By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror After 42 years study- ing and practicing medi- cine Dr. Rob Roberts is taking a well-deserved break after serving West- port area patients for the last five years. "I felt we had a good highly qualified physi- cian ready to take my place," said Roberts referring to Dr. Amy Locke who is taking on many of his patients. Roberts began his practice from his home in Westport in February 2010. He has been prac- ticing since August 2013 at the CPHC family health team on Bedford Street in Westport and since September 2014 Dr. Amy Locke. During his lifetime Roberts has made his home in Quakertown, Pennsylvania where he grew up and in Westport where his Canadian mother had her roots. "I grew up in Quaker- town and went to school there but my heart was really here," said Roberts who has always enjoyed Westport's sense of com- munity. "The day school got out my mother packed us in the car and we didn't leave until the day before school started. "When I come into Westport from Hwy 42 and see the lake I still get that same feeling of home. I always knew I'd be back part time or full time," he said. In 2002 when the opportunity came up to purchase his family home overlooking the Mill Pond Roberts decid- ed to purchase it sight unseen from Terry and Mary Cowan who used the home as overflow for the hotel. His grandparents Tom and Bessie Roberts owned the hotel which is now The Cove and had built the home which they have since exten- sively renovated. A parcel to the west of Cty Rd 2 north of the 401 has been zoned from com- mercial to highway com- mercial. The east parcel includes rural and commercial zon- ing where an RV business is located and has been proposed to receive a new commercial zone category, Major Tourism Commer- cial. "The intent of the zone is to encourage a large range of uses that will gen- erate employment and or support our tourism sector while ensuring that any permitted development will have a distinct rural, and more significantly- Leeds and the 1000 Island character," stated town- ship planner, Elaine Mal- lory in her report. The list of permitted uses includes services, retail and tourism related services as well as lodging accommodation and camping. A public meeting about the zoning will be held on April 13 at 6:00 p.m. pre- ceding the monthly coun- cil meeting.
